Shape change probably has more to do with the aspect ratio of those two resolutions more than anything else.

1280x1024 is a different aspect ratio than 1024x768.

640/480=1.3333...
800/600=1.3333...
1024/768=1.3333...
1280/1024=1.25

1280x960 will give the same aspect ratio (1.3333...), with the same horizontal resolution.
