hello all

this is probably a stupid question but the speed with which a file is downloaded nay
be slow if the site of download has a slow modem connection even if I have ADSL
or cable. True or false?

sometimes my ADSL downloads at more than 50K/sec and then the next file and
site is 6K/sec

Graham,
This is normal.
The speed of download depends on many factors
including but not limited to:-
proxy cache behaviour.
speed of the source server connection
state of the phone line (noise etc)
degree of congestion on the InterNet.

Hi Graham,
Three things can affect file download or web page loading speed.

The first is a narrow "pipe" anywhere between you and the server.

The second is if the server, serving the data is heavily loaded
and hence running slowly (or is in fact underpowered for the service).

and the third, sometimes forgotten, is the effect of your or the
other ends, ISP cache. If the data is already in your ISPs cache, it's
going to come down a lot faster than if it has to be retrieved from the
distant server. Also if the data is in the other ISPs cache (or the ftp
or web site is hosted by the other ISP), this will also give a quicker
transfer.

  Cheers/2

Do your darndest to get a real Banksia (eg Wave).

I just did a Google search for Banksia modem site:.au

and got the following hit among others (trimmed some bumpf out of
it):

And if I throw in "Internal" I get about 400 hits including a lot of

that hard to find the website of a a retailer near you.

key points are - make sure its not a Win-modem. The
only one of those that work under OS/2 is from Lucent
(AT&T) and then not all models.

Rockwell chipset is always good and make sure it's
V90, not K56 or X2.

Other than that I've had success with both "no-name"
models I bought but it is a bit of a lottery !

Hi Gav,

I've been using a Diamond SupraExpress 56i for several years now with no trouble. It's an
ISA card. I have no idea if there are any PCI modems that work - especially with all the
"winmodems" around.

Subject: Re: [os2genau] Slow processes in eCS

Hi,

I decided to delete all files in my Netscape trash folder to see if that would speed up the
delete process but it didn't. I then had a look at my G: drive (where eCS and Netscape are
installed) and opened the Netscape mail and then the trash folders. Tomy amazement the Trash
folder still had files in it which I had deleted in Netscape. There were over 2MB files
there. I tried to delete these but couldn't so I made a new Trash folder and renamed the
original. This has resulted in a definite improvement in speed in deleting files in my Inbox
but it is still slower than in Warp4.
Any further ideas?

Alan Duval
