<nitpick>
grooves "like a phonograph record" would be "SPIRAL", NOT "helical".
"Helical" would be like a spiral stair case, or threads on a bolt.
Some of the early (Edison?) sound recorders DID cut helical threads on the
outside of a cylinder.
