It's my understanding that the Iroquoi (sp) Indians of the Eastern
United states had a 'social code' by which if you were away from your
home, you were supposed to put up a big prominent banner marker, so that
other people would know to steer away and not go near your house.  I
think it's codified in the Iroquoi Constitution.

They apparently had a very different attitude about respect for other
people's property that we do today.
