Sure, as you have the right spare part, fit it. Saves a lot of problems.

I would still have a go at skimming the old roller. It would be 
intereting to see what happens, and if the repair 'holds' (does it 
continue to swell, or what). Somebody might need to do this repair in the 
future and not have a suitable repalcement part.
