Didn't that slow things down quite a lot?

My solution was to reprogram HGC horizontal clock so that it was 640 pixels 
displayed and 400 lines down -- no copying needed :-)

I concur, most monitors handled it well (although one I had the misfortune of 
working with produced a nearly ultrasonic "whine" when operating in this mode)
