No, I am pretty sure it was battery-backed RAM

I seem to rememebr (and hey. it's about 15 years ago,...) that you could 
modify some Epson RAM card to work in the HP48SX calculator. I think it 
was a mod to the low-voltage detection circuitry. I wouldn't be suprised 
if the 'real' HP cards were OEMed by Epson...
