I've run across a number of 9track tapes that were literally "sweating" 
and even with the old oven bake proceedure, the tapes were burying the 
tape heads in a sludge, the process of continually stopping, cleaning, 
rewinding and restarting takes a lot out of the drive and the tapes get 
worse as they go.     Also, many tapes (depending on make and age) can 
actually be so brittle that during the read the material seperates from 
the transport, not a pretty sight.
