I always figured they'd make a good basis for a turbocompound engine,
especially since the emissions get worse as the engine speed increases
(even less combustion time).  Use a turbocharger, bleed off air into a
combustion chamber and use the heated (now fairly clean) air to drive a
quill-shaft turbine.
