Real IBM ST506 controllers don't have a low-level format routine in the 
ROM, you have to load a program from floppy. It was on the IBM Advanced 
Diagnostics disk (IIRC), I assume there's something suitable on the web 
somewhere.

For _most clone_ hard disk controllers, the address is C800:5 BTW
