The Apple ][ and ][+ bth had 8 slots.  Slot 0 was for memory or ROM cards.

What Apple ][ model are you referring to?  The ][ and ][+ motherboards
both had lots of chips and the design didn't change that much between
them.  The //e and later boards were drastically different.
