You must use a PS/2 mouse that actually came with a serial adaptor.  Just
any PS/2 mouse won't work.  What happens is that the mouse detects on
power-up whether or not it's plugged into a PS/2 port or a serial adaptor,
and then starts sending stuff out in the appropriate mode.
