Not if I could help it :-) Although I am pretty sure I did flip the 
switch with things turned on at least once...

The main reason I did this was that I had a 3" (no, I don't mean 3.5") 
drive in the CoCo disk box, and it was sometimes useful to connect it to 
the Model 3.

Yes. The TRS80 M1/3/4 and CoCo drive interface is pretty standard. PC 
360K and 720K drives should work find if you get the drive selects sorted 
out. I have certainly used as 3.5" 720K drive on the Model 3/4.
