Either you're losing picture quality through lossy compression (JPEG?)
or you have truly crappy colour fidelity (1GB is 8Gb, divide by 8
megapixels and 500 pictures and I get...about two bits per pixel, less
than one per primary).  Neither would be acceptable for what, for lack
of a better term, I might call a "serious" photograph.
