If I had to do this I would look for a CF to IDE adaptor
(simple,passive,cheap) and combine it with an early 
model IDE controller and then use no-larger than 40MB
CF media, to appease the controller.
I understand that the jump from the PC/1981 to XT/1983
made it possible to boot from a HD, otherwise a floppy
had to be involved.
