There was a RL278 option, but I have never seen one in person.  I
don't know why it was always referred to as an RL02 controller (as
opposed to the RL8A which was routinely used with RL01 drives... I've
done that myself), but perhaps there's a firmware reason for that. 
Certainly there's no engineering reason why the controller couldn't
talk to both RL01 and RL02 drives.  The cabling is identical, and the
only difference from the device driver's standpoint is number of
cylinders.
