Screen Num 1

In this series we will be covering details of how to convert the PAYLOTUS.DIF
file output from PAYUSBAT.COM to a Symphony Spread Sheet File. We will be
using electronic photographs of actual Symphony screens to illustrate this.
First, run the Symphony Access program and select Translate from the Menu.
The Symphony Utility Disk must be in the default drive.

Screen Num 2

Symphony will display the Translate Menu - select DIF to WRK

Screen Num 3

Tell Symphony where to look for the PAYLOTUS.DIF file. Our sample file was
on B:\PAYOUT - yours may be somewhere else. Tell it where yours is.

Screen Num 4

Symphony displays all .DIF files found and asks you to pick one. Select
PAYLOTUS.DIF by pressing the space bar then Enter.

Screen Num 5

Tell Symphony where you want it to write the Spread Sheet file.

Screen Num 6

And tell Symphony what you want the Spread Sheet to look like - across the
screen or down the screen. We like the RowWise translation - it looks very
similar to the PAYROLL USA Payroll Register. It is a matter of personal
choice.

Screen Num 7

Symphony asks if it is OK to proceed - Select YES

Screen Num 8

And the Translation is Finished.

Screen Num 9

So select EXIT to get back to the main menu

Screen Num 10

YES we really are finished.

Screen Num 11

And now we can select Symphony and look at the results.

Screen Num 1 of Sympmain

We have run Symphony, pressed F9 in the usual way and selected File to get this
menu. We are going to set the Directory to wherever the Symphony Translate
Utility put our new Spread Sheet.

Screen Num 2

Ours is on B:\PAYOUT - yours might be different.

Screen Num 3

And we Retrieve in the usual way.

Screen Num 4

Symphony displays the available Spread Sheet files, and we pick ours (happens
to be the only one on this directory).

Screen Num 5

Symphony loads the Spread Sheet and displays it. It looks awful because column
width and numeric format have not been set. So we press F10 to get this Menu
and select Settings

Screen Num 6

We then select Width (could also do Format - Fixed 2 decimals at the same time
but we didn't bother, you might want to bother)

Screen Num 7

And tell Symphony you want columns 15 characters wide.

Screen Num 8

Then Quit to get back to the Spread Sheet.

Screen Num 9

There now, doesnt that look better. Particularly on larger spread sheets you
might also want to lock the side titles and/or first few rows (employee ID) so
they remain visible as you page through the Spread Sheet. It is now a regular
Symphony file, just as if you had keyed it in the hard way. All Symphony
functions will work. If you re-save it the new column width etc. will (more...

Screen Num 10

be saved with it so you dont need to go through the Settings Menu again next
time you Retrieve it. Dont forget, we did'nt format the numbers so we only
get decimals displayed if there are any. You can set them to always display
- it looks nicer. We will just page through the Spread Sheet.

Screen Num 11

Here is another Page.

Screen Num 12

And Another.

Screen Num 13

And here is the end of the Spread Sheet. Of course it also goes off to the
right and the right arrow key can be used to diplay that, just as normal.
That also is the End of our Symphony Translation Tutorial. We hope you found
it useful. If you found it effective would you be interested in us preparing
a similar presentation for your Company's Sales or Educational material ?
