Screen Num 1

In this series of screens we will be looking at how to import the various
PAYPCF??.DIF and .HDR files output by PAYROLL USA into a PC-File Database.
We will be using electronic photographs of actual PC-File Screens to illustrate
this process. PC-File is an excellent, user friendly, database manager which
is distributed on a ShareWare basis. This version does not handle (more...)

Screen Num 2

Directories too well so use the DOS CD command to set the required directory
before running PC-File. Tell PC-File which drive the .DIF/.HDR files are on
(see previous screen) and it will display all the .HDR files and ask you to
select one (see above). At this point PC-File assumes the databases already
exist - so lets go along with that and pick one as an example.

Screen Num 3

PC-File reports 0 records, but gives us the menu which is what we wanted.
Select F8 for Utilities.

Screen Num 4

PC-File displays the Utilities Menu, Select 6 to Import a database.

Screen Num 5

Tell it where the file is (again)

Screen Num 6

PC-File displays all files on that drive:\directory and asks you to pick one.
Key in the name of one of the PAYPCF??.DIF files (bottom of screen under this
text)

Screen Num 7

PC-File will check for the presence of .HDR files and ask you to pick one.
Select the one with the same name as the .DIF file you previously selected.
(PAYUSBAT.COM also created the .HDR files to describe the data in the
corresponding .DIF file.)

Screen Num 8

PC-File checks our .HDR file, finds no fault with it, and asks us what format
our data file is in. Select 3 for DIF.

Screen Num 9

PC-File reads our .DIF file and translates it to its own .DTA/.INX format then
returns us to the main Menu where all the regular PC-File facilities are
available. Let us select F3 for Display.

Screen Num 10

We get the broad display and part of the record is invisible - off the right
side of the screen. We can look at full individual records by entering the
required record number at the bottom of the screen. We entered #1 to get to
the next screen.

Screen Num 11

And here is the first record. You can page through the records in the usual
way by entering + or - at the bottom of the screen. Also, please remember
it takes 3 PC-File Databases to hold one PAYROLL USA record. You are only
looking at part of Francis Usher's YTD Payroll record here. We have put key
information in each of the 3 databases so you can link the 3 together.
