FIBER OPTIC SERVICES

Fiber Optic Services from Pacific Bell

uses the state-of-the-art fiber optic

technology to provide the highest

quality communications service in

Pacific Bell territory. Fiber Optic

Services technology provides the

customer the capability for high-speed

transmission of data/voice/video

signals over a glass fiber cable.

^

With Fiber Optic Services,

communication signals are converted by

electronics into light pulses. Either

lasers or LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)

are used to generate the light pulses

into one end of the fiber, and at the

other end, the light pulses are

converted back to electric pulses for

normal use by common communications

equipment. The light pulses are turned

off and on nearly one billion times per
^

second. Because of the nature of

fiber, the light pulses are regenerated

less often than electrical pulses on

conventional facilities over similar

distances. The fiber itself is no

larger than a strand of human hair.

The bandwidth and speed of Fiber Optic

Services is currently offered up to 405

Mbps, which is much greater than even

channel speeds between host computers

and peripherals. In addition to speed,
^

Fiber Optic Services offer the benefit

of outstanding security due to the

impossibility of effectively tapping

fiber.

Today, Pacific Bell has installed fiber

backbone ring networks in downtown San

Francisco and Los Angeles. These

networks supported the 1984 Democratic

National Convention and 1984 Los

Angeles Olympics, respectively.
