                           README File

This README file contains information about Artline that was not
available when the manuals and release note were printed.

                              SETUP

1. Corrupted Files

If you need to run Setup to replace files that have been
corrupted, DELETE the corrupted files first. Setup does not
overwrite existing files during a Change Existing Installation
operation.

2. Installing on Fragmented Drives

If your hard disk drive is extremely fragmented, Setup might
report that there is not enough room for Artline, even though
there is enough total disk space on the drive. The fragmentation
of the disk causes this error condition, which you can cure with
a disk optimization program.

3. Disappearing Cursor

On some systems the cursor becomes a dash or disappears entirely
after you exit Setup, although command line is still available.
The cursor is restored if you start and then exit an application
or if you re-boot the system.

                         ARTLINE PROGRAM

1. Filenames

Follow standard DOS naming conventions when saving your files.
The filename can have a maximum of eight characters. Do NOT use
wildcard characters (* or ?) in your filename. Artline does not
save files whose names contain wildcard characters.

2. Line End Styles

Thick lines (greater than approximately 0.15 inches) with the
short squared end style can appear to have rounded ends when
the rounded Join style is selected.

To avoid this problem, select the standard pointed Join style.

NOTE: This problem appears only on the screen and in output to
non-PostScript printers. The end styles print correctly on
PostScript printers, regardless of how they appear on the screen.

3. Accented Text Characters

Accented characters--especially , , and --placed next to each
other in a line of text can overlap because the accents are wider
than the characters themselves.

To avoid this problem, use a monospaced font like Courier; or
convert the text to curves, break the group, and space the
characters manually.

4. Screen Resolution - PostScript Fill Options

For successful output, do not use a Screen Resolution value of
less than 5 lpi (five lines per inch).

5. Fountained Groups

Changing line attributes or line color for grouped elements can
change the way fountains appear in the group.

If you assigned the fountain after making the group, the range of
colors in the fountain applies to the group as a whole, not
separately to each element in the group. Changing line
attributes or color causes the fountain to be applied to each
element separately.

To restore the fountain to the group as a whole, select the group
and then assign the fountain to it again.

6. Read-Only Files

Do NOT attempt to edit and save a file whose attribute is set to
Read-Only. A Read-Only file cannot be overwritten, and your work
will be lost. If you must work on a Read-Only file, use the Save
As command to save your work under a new name.

7. Step in Back/Step in Front Commands

The Step in Back and Step in Front commands work only on a single
selected element or group, not on multiply selected elements or
groups.

                      FONT FILE CONVERSION

Fontographer PFA Files for the Macintosh

The Fontographer font file conversion described in the Artline
Utilitities Guide works only for PFA files created in PC format.
It does NOT work for PFA files created on a Macintosh and then
converted to PC format.

                            CLIP ART

C141C.EPS from One Mile Up

The airplane in the file C141C.EPS (in the subdirectory
\ARTLINE\ARTWORK\FEDERAL) is not visible when you first open the
file. To make the plane visible, select all elements (Select
All command or Alt-S) and then choose a line width from the Line
Width tool's menu. Save the file after you make this change.
