WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS UPDATE PACKAGE?

This update package contains the following files:

- UPDATE.TXT -- the file containing the instructions for using UPDATE.EXE
                  to perform switch OS updates.
- UPDATE.EXE -- the program you will execute to perform the update.
- READB429.TXT -- list of problems resolved in the operating system.
- B_04_29.SWI -- the switch OS file, version B.04.29.
- B_04_29.FDD -- the FDDI Module OS file, version B.04.29.
- RELNOTES.TXT -- this file.

===========================================================================
WHO SHOULD UPDATE? EVERYONE!

Here's why:

+ The latest OS release includes fixes for problems found in
the previous release and support for new features. Installing
the latest OS release eliminates potential problem sources.

+ If a problem does develop in your network, having the latest OS
release already running can contribute to finding a solution faster.

Also, you should update if you will be installing a module or transceiver
that requires a later version OS release than is now running in the switch.

  SWITCH 2000 FDDI MODULE
INSTALLATION NOTE: If an FDDI Module is installed in the switch, make
sure you upgrade both the Switch 2000 OS and the
                     FDDI Module OS.

Both the Switch 2000 OS and the FDDI Module OS
should be kept up to date with the latest versions,
and these version numbers must match each other for
                     proper operation.

Update the switch OS first, then the FDDI Module OS.

     - To identify the OS release version that is now running
in the switch, see "Identifying the OS Version", below.

     - To see a listing of modules and transceivers and their
minimum required OS release versions, see "Minimum
       Operating System (OS) Requirements", below.

IDENTIFYING THE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) VERSION

You can identify the OS version on your switch by running the switch
console interface, selecting "Statistics" or "Status and Counters" from
the Main menu, and then selecting "Switch Information" from the
Statistics or Status and Counters menu. That is:

Status and Counters -> Switch Information

You can identify the OS version for an installed FDDI Module (for the
Switch 2000) by selecting "Module Information" from the Statistics or
Status and Counters menu. The FDDI Module OS version is included on the
screen in the description for that module.

You can identify the OS version for an installed ATM Module (for the
Switch 2000) by selecting "Configuration" and then selecting "ATM
Console Port" from the Configuration menu. You are now at the ATM
command prompt. Execute the command "version".

==========================================================================
DOWNLOADING METHODS

Methods and instructions for downloading an OS to the switch are described
in the "File Transfers" chapter in the User's Guide or Configuration Guide
that shipped with the switch. The manual is also available on HP's ProCurve
website at the following URL:

     www.hp.com/go/procurve

Detailed instructions for using the UPDATE.EXE program are found in the
UPDATE.TXT file included in this update package.

NEW RELEASE B.04.29

This software resolves the operating problems listed in the READB429.TXT file.

===========================================================================
RELEASE B.04.28

- This software provides enhanced "Find-Fix-Inform" (FFI) problem descriptions
and suggested actions in the switch event log and web-browser interface.
Also, B.04.28 resolves the operating problems listed in the READB428.TXT file.

===========================================================================
RELEASE B.04.25

This version delivers new functionality for the HP AdvanceStack switches:

1) Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) "fast" mode, designed for endnodes that are
directly-connected to the switch (no hub between endnode and switch). This
parameter is configured on a per-port basis, in the Configuration --> Spanning
Tree menu. Configuring "fast" mode on a port causes that port to immediately
begin "forwarding" packets to/from that port when the port becomes active.
This avoids the approximately 30-second delay that Spanning Tree uses to verify
the new link does not cause a topology loop. Avoiding the Spanning Tree startup
delay allows Novell and other clients to communicate with the server as soon as
the network card (NIC) is enabled. After that, the switch continues to listen
for and send STP packets on those configured ports. This protects the user who
might inadvertently connect a hub or switch to that port and create a network
loop - Spanning Tree will detect the loop after a short time, since the port
listens for and sends STP packets on that port.

2) The ability to enable the switch as a TFTP server to retrieve its
configuration file. By default, this option is disabled. It can be
enabled (and later disabled) by using these case-sensitive commands:
setmib hpSwitchIpTftpMode.0 -i 1 (disable tftp server, the default)
   setmib hpSwitchIpTftpMode.0 -i 2 (enable tftp server)
The commands are issued from the Advanced Commands area of the switch console.

NOTE: To issue the command from an SNMP utility, the complete Object ID (OID)
      to set is: 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.14.11.5.1.7.1.5.6.0
and the value to set (1 or 2) is an "enumerated" type (i.e. an integer).

===========================================================================
RELEASE B.04.xx

o Enables the switch to support HP's intuitive,
  friendly Web-browser interface for:
    - Monitoring switch performance
    - Reporting problems local to the switch and suggesting solutions
    - Configuring several switch features
    - Diagnosing switch operation
    - Providing security options
    - Connecting to in-house or HP support resources
    - An additional means to connect to the switch for diagnostics

===========================================================================
RELEASE B.03.2x

o Enables the Switch 2000 to support the
HP J3246A AdvanceStack ATM Uplink Module.

o Enables the switch to support the HP J3192C AdvanceStack
100Base-TX Twisted-Pair Transceiver Module, which supersedes
the "B" version of this transceiver module. (For the Switch 2000,
requires the HP J3191A AdvanceStack Switch 100Base-T Module.)

HP J3246A ADVANCESTACK ATM UPLINK MODULE RELEASE NOTE

The following list details software issues associated with the HP J3246A
AdvanceStack ATM Uplink Module. Additionally, this list contains
documentation errata, highlighting operational information that has
changed in the time between the production of the manual and the release
of the module.

Software Issues

1. The following statistics and counters are known to return inaccurate
values. A fix is planned for a future release:

   Command Field Comment
   ------- ----- -------
bridge stat Utilization Always reads zero
bridge stat Octets Number shown is slightly higher
                                      than actual value
bridge vppstats Octets Number shown is slightly higher
                                      than actual value
elan-stats In UCast Pkts Number shown is slightly lower
                                      than actual value

2. When two ATM modules ("A" and "B") are connected directly using both
primary and backup ports (i.e. PRIMARY -> PRIMARY and BACKUP -> BACKUP),
use of the ama-set command on only one module may not yield a switch to
   the intended port.

For example, if the command is issued on module "A", on rare
occasions module "B" may not recognize quickly enough that
module "A" has deactivated its primary port. In this case,
module "A" will fail to find a valid link on its backup port
and switch back to its primary port. In this case, the command
is executed, but the valid link remains on the primary port.
Issuing the command a second time usually produces the desired
   effect.

Documentation Errata

The following correction refers to the HP AdvanceStack ATM Uplink Module
Installation and Reference Guide (J3246-90001):

  - On page 1-11 of the manual, step #10 should be performed before
step #9. Otherwise, the Port-enabled LED will not behave as
described. Essentially, users should attach a length of fiber to
the port and customize the port configuration before checking the
    Port-enabled LED.
