HP ADVANCESTACK SWITCH 800T, SWITCH 2000, FDDI MODULE, AND ATM MODULE
OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) UPDATE UTILITY

This update file contains the following information:
- Identifying the Operating System (OS) Version
- Procedures to Update the Switch OS and, If Applicable, the FDDI
  Module OS
- Troubleshooting Update Problems
- Procedures to Update the ATM Uplink Module OS

==========================================================================
IDENTIFYING THE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) VERSION

You can identify the OS version on your switch by running the switch
console interface, selecting "Statistics" or "Status and Counters" from
the Main menu, and then selecting "Switch Information" from the
Statistics or Status and Counters menu. That is:

Status and Counters -> Switch Information

     Or

   Statistics -> Switch Information

You can identify the OS version for an installed FDDI Module (for the
Switch 2000) by selecting "Module Information" from the Statistics or
Status and Counters menu. The FDDI Module OS version is included on the
screen in the description for that module.

You can identify the OS version for an installed ATM Module (for the
Switch 2000) by selecting "Configuration" and then selecting "ATM
Console Port" from the Configuration menu. You are now at the ATM
command prompt. Execute the command "version".

==========================================================================
PROCEDURES TO UPDATE THE SWITCH OS AND, IF APPLICABLE, THE FDDI MODULE OS

NOTE: Use these instructions to update the OS on either a Switch 2000
or a Switch 800T. IGNORE references to the FDDI Module if you
are updating the OS on a Switch 800T or if your Switch 2000 does
not have an FDDI Module installed.

The UPDATE.EXE utility does not support the ATM Uplink Module.
Please refer to the "Procedures to Update the ATM Uplink
Module OS" below for updating the ATM module.

The Switch OS and FDDI Module OS (if applicable) are updated over an
RS-232 connection from a PC to the switch's console port. Make sure
you update both the switch (first) and then any installed FDDI
Modules, as described in the following procedures:

1. Make sure that the ANSI.SYS driver is being loaded when your PC is
    booted.

In either the CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.NT file, whichever is
appropriate for your PC, the following statement must be
    included:

          DEVICE=pathname\ANSI.SYS

where pathname is the directory structure where ANSI.SYS is
    located.

ANSI.SYS must be loaded by whatever file initializes the DOS
environment; CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.NT. Check the following table for
the CONFIG file used on your PC and its default directory location.
The file may actually be in a different directory, depending on how
    your PC was set up:

             Operating System File Default Directory
          --------------------------------------------------------------
          native DOS, Windows 3.1 CONFIG.SYS \ or \DOS
          Windows 95 CONFIG.SYS \WINDOWS\COMMAND
          Windows NT CONFIG.NT \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

If necessary, update your CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.NT file and reboot
your PC so the ANSI.SYS device driver is then loaded.

2. At the switch do both of the following:
    a. Connect the RS-232 console port on the switch to the appropriate
COM1 or COM2 port on your PC.

You can use a direct connection through a serial cable (for
example, the console cable supplied with the switch) or a modem
       connection.

Note that COM3 and COM4 cannot be used.

    b. If a password is set, remove it by pressing and releasing the
Config Clear button on the switch. (Pressing Config Clear by
itself clears only the password(s), if any have been set. For
more on Config Clear, refer to the installation manual you
       received with the switch.)

NOTE: If a password is set on the switch, the update will fail.

3. Run the UPDATE.EXE program.

Assuming you are running UPDATE.EXE from a floppy disk and the
PC COM1 port is attached to the switch by cable, at the A:\ DOS
       prompt enter the command:

          update -f -u

where -f indicates fast transfer mode (19200 baud), and -u
indicates that the program will prompt you for the name
       of the download file.

NOTE: THE -u PARAMETER IS REQUIRED (and this parameter is
case-sensitive). All parameters MUST be typed in
             lowercase.

The full syntax for the command is:

          update [-c<com port>] [-b<baud>] [-f] [-u]

4. The next screen asks you to confirm that ANSI.SYS has been loaded.
If so, enter Y; otherwise, enter N and then complete step 1 above
    and rerun the update program.

5. The next screen reminds you that the switch will not be accessible
by users during the update process. Press F1 to continue with the
    update.

6. The next screen summarizes the current COM port settings that
UPDATE.EXE will use. Press F4 (Continue Switch) to continue the
    process for the switch.

7. The next screen asks you to initiate the console connection to the
    switch:

    - If the PC is connected by serial cable to the switch, press
      Enter several times.

    - If the PC is connected by a modem to the switch, enter the
appropriate modem dial commands (for example, ATDT 5551234)
to dial the remote modem, then press Enter several times to
      start the console connection.

NOTE: If you have a password set on the switch, the update
will fail. Refer to step 2-b, above.

The following messages should then be displayed:

Attempting connection . . . (you may need to press Enter again)

       Console port accessed.

Press F1 or F4 to proceed with the update.

       switch console>

8. Press F4 (Update SwitchOS) to download the new switch OS.

Perform this step first, before downloading new code to any installed
    FDDI Modules.

9. At the prompt, enter the file name for the new switch OS. (See your
Release Notes for the actual file name.) For example:

       Enter download filename> B_04_24.SWI

The update will now begin. When it completes, the following message
    should appear:

       Firmware update completed successfully

At this point, the switch reboots itself.

NOTE: If the update process does not complete successfully, see
          "Troubleshooting" below, after step 12.

10. Do ONE of the following:
    - If no FDDI Module is installed, or if you are updating a Switch
800T, press F8 to exit the update program and you are finished
      with the update.

    - To download the new OS to an FDDI Module (if applicable), go to
      step 11.

11.
    a. IF:
       - You have any FDDI Modules installed in the Switch 2000, AND
       - The FDDI OS version number (for example, B.04.24) does not match
the version number of the OS you just loaded into the switch

THEN press F4 (Update Another) and do steps 11b through 12.

    b. The next screen reminds you that the switch will not be accessible
by users during the update process. Press F1 to continue with the
       update.

    c. The next screen summarizes the current COM port settings that
UPDATE.EXE will use. Press F4 (Continue Switch) to continue the
       process for the FDDI Module.

NOTE: If you have a password set on the switch, the update
will fail. See step 2-b, above.

The following messages should then be displayed:

Attempting connection . . . (you may need to press Enter again)

         Console port accessed.

Press F1 or F4 to proceed with the update.

    e. Press F1 (Update ModuleOS) to download the new OS to an FDDI module.
You will be prompted to enter the identity of the Switch 2000
slot (A, B, C, D, E, or F) in which the FDDI Module is installed.

    f. At the prompt, enter the file name for the new FDDI Module OS.
       For example:

          Enter download filename> B_04_24.FDD

The update will now begin. When it completes, the following
       message should appear:

          Firmware update completed successfully

NOTE: If the update process does not complete successfully, see
"Troubleshooting Update Problems" after step 12, below.

12. If you have a second FDDI Module installed in the switch, repeat
steps 11-a through 11-f. Otherwise, press F8 to exit the update program.
The switch automatically reboots and activates the new OS,
except when running the update program under Windows NT.

    NOTE FOR WINDOWS NT:
If you are running the update program in a DOS window under
Windows NT, after updating the last FDDI module in your Switch
2000, the switch may not reboot automatically; the Self-test LED
and all the FDDI Module LEDs will remain lit. In this case, to
activate the new FDDI Module OS that was successfully downloaded,
you must manually reset the switch by one of these methods:
    - Press the Reset button on the front of the switch, OR
    - Power cycle the switch by disconnecting and then reconnecting
the power cord from the switch or from the power source.

==========================================================================
TROUBLESHOOTING UPDATE PROBLEMS

If for any reason, such as a power outage, the update process
does not complete successfully, perform these steps:

1.) Reset the switch by one of these methods:
     - Press the Reset button on the front of the switch, OR
     - Power cycle the switch by disconnecting and then reconnecting
the power cord from the switch or from the power source.

2.) When the switch's self-test completes, rerun the update program
as described in step 3, above.

Also, ensure that a password is not set on the switch during the update.
If a password is set, the update will fail. To clear passwords, see
step 2-b, above.
