                            BigFiles ToolBook (tm)

software license from Carousel MicroTools, Inc.

The BigFiles ToolBook contains enhanced versions of certain programs supplied
with the Use-a-ToolKit (tm) for MS-DOS 2.x. You need the Use-a-ToolKit in
order to run these programs.

The enhancements consist of expanded capacities for certain internal work
areas used by the Tools. The ordinary Tools support most applications and
require about 100K bytes of memory (not counting DOS). The enhanced Tools
support very large files and require about 200K bytes of memory (not counting
DOS).

This ToolBook is supplied on three diskettes, numbered 1, 2, and 3. The
following files are on these diskettes:

   README -- Disk 1 -- this file
CONTENTS -- Disk 1 -- complete list of files provided
GROUPS -- Disk 1 -- names of Tools served by each Toolbox
                               and where to find them
   AUTOEXEC.BAT -- Disk 1 -- suggested startup batch file
WORKDSK*.BAT -- Disk 1 -- batch files to build working floppies
                               of ordinary Tools
BIGDSK*.BAT -- Disk 1 -- batch files to convert working floppies
                               to use enhanced Tools
   CMTBOX27.EXE -- Disk 1 -- Toolbox for ed(e) and sedit Tools
   CMTBOX28.EXE -- Disk 1 -- Toolbox for diff and sortmrg(sort) Tools
CMTBOX29.EXE -- Disk 2 -- Toolbox for ar and oldar Tools
CMTBOX30.EXE -- Disk 2 -- Toolbox for macro and xref Tools
   CMTBOX31.EXE -- Disk 3 -- Toolbox for ratfor Tool

                             SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

DO NOT write on these diskettes. Do not erase or rename any of the files on
them. They are your MASTER DISKS. Keep them safe! Make backup copies of
them right away.

First carefully read the installation instructions in the manual. Then study
the special instructions that came with your Use-a-ToolKit. The following
instructions describe the BigFiles ToolBook and may affect how you install ALL
of the Tools.

1) The enhanced versions of eleven Tools are contained in five Toolboxes.
These correspond to five of the Toolboxes supplied with the Use-a-Toolkit
   as follows:

                Release 2.00 BigFiles ToolBook for MS-DOS 2.x

           Enhanced Ordinary Tools
           Toolbox Toolbox Supported

         CMTBOX27.EXE CMTBOX07.EXE ed(e), sedit
         CMTBOX28.EXE CMTBOX08.EXE diff, sortmrg(sort)
         CMTBOX29.EXE CMTBOX09.EXE ar, oldar
         CMTBOX30.EXE CMTBOX10.EXE macro, xref
         CMTBOX31.EXE CMTBOX11.EXE ratfor

You use the same tool.COM files supplied with the Use-a-ToolKit.

2) The same tool.COM files (simple loader programs) can load either the
ordinary or the enhanced Toolboxes. If there is an entry

      BIGTOOLS=on

in the environment, they load the enhanced version. Otherwise they load
the ordinary version. If they can't find the version they want anywhere in
the TOOLPATH directories, they quit with an error message.

This means that you can keep either or both versions of the Tools resident
on disk, if you have room. Just execute the command

      set bigtools=on

to specify the enhanced version, or

      set bigtools=

   to specify the ordinary version.

(Even with lots of memory, you might want to keep the ordinary versions
handy. Some users allocate portions of memory to RAM-disk or to
independent tasks, leaving around 128K bytes for executing programs. Only
the ordinary versions can run in such a constricted space. The enhanced
versions require about 200K bytes of memory, not counting DOS.)

3) The suggested AUTOEXEC.BAT file on Disk 1 contains the command

      set bigtools=on

Insert this command into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you plan to use the
BigFiles version most of the time.

4) If you use the Tools from small- or medium-sized floppy disks, you will
probably find that they will not all fit on the system at the same time.
(A full set of Tools of either version occupies 850-900K bytes on disk. A
duplicate set of ordinary or enhanced Toolboxes would take another 350K
bytes.) You will need to build working diskettes containing convenient
   groups of the Tools.

The four batch files WORKDSK*.BAT on Disk 1 are provided to build four
working Tool diskettes containing the ordinary Tools from empty (but
formatted) floppies. The four batch files BIGDSK*.BAT will install the

BigFiles versions onto those working diskettes. The resulting floppies
will each contain around 270K bytes of Tool programs.

You may need to build different kinds of working Tool diskettes using the
WORKDSK*.BAT and BIGDSK*.BAT files as models.
