Very strange :( did you install acpi on your GA install? With silver it
installed by default, with GA you need to enable it. What motherboard are
you using?

Yours cups problems definite relate to usb as the job can't be written to
the printer for some reason.

my new printer should arrive today or tomorrow - Epson TX810FW - should
work nicely with cups for printing and sane for scanning. If ther are any
issues i'll bug the guy that ports them to OS/2 :)rinter has usb, wifi and
ethernet connections. I.ll also be installing an Everest CIS into this
printer.

if anyone in Adelaide is interested in a CUPS tested inkjet multifunction
printer, my Epson RX650 will soon be available - it also has an Everest
continuous ink system installed in it for very heap printing and does great
photo prints via the memory card slots.

Cheers,

Paul.

Beware the Fuji! Although it says it's a PCL printer, that's only
through a WinPrinter driver - in my experience you are better looking at
Brother printers. They often use the same print engine as Fuji Xerox but
put a proppoer print engine in the printer - but buyer beware, they
don't do this on ALL models. MFCs for example are often winprinters.

It should work with either the HP laserjet driver or the IBM Postscript
driver. with the postscript driver, you'll need to locate the ppd file for
the printer either on the driver cd or on the web.

I'd suggest a network printer rather than parallel - assuming you have a
free network port on your router.

cheers,

Paul.

Where do you get the information that makes you think the 3125N uses a
WinPrinter driver to achieve the PCL compatability?

The page for the 3125N at
http://www.fujixeroxprinters dot com dot au/en/Products/blackwhiteprinters/phaser3125n.aspx
states:
Print Language or PDL (Page Description Language) PCL6, PostScript 3
compatible

The page for the 3124 at
http://www.fujixeroxprinters dot com dot au/en/Products/BlackWhitePrinters/Phaser3124.aspx
Print Language or PDL (Page Description Language) Host Based

So Fuji Xerox are upfront when it comes to Host Based printers...

Cheers,

Paul.

My comments were general, I have almost bought Fuji printers in the past
only to find that after digging, they are host printers. This is
probably not true of all models and I haven't specifically checked this
model. I would expect the high end commercial products to be "complete"
but the low-end (sub A$150) retail products often are. The point is that
the retailer does not supply this information you have to dig to find
out if the printer is a "host based" i.e. Win Printer.

Good thing the 3125N is $159 then - it should be OK :)

Yes! I installed acpi. Used psd=acpi.psd /smp /cd as I found that this
was the only combination that worked in eCS 2.0 silver that allowed me
to use my scanner.
I have tried psd=acpi.psd /smp /apic in the GA version but booting stops
with an error message.
psd=acpi.psd /smp /pic works with the GA version also but still no USB
recognition.

I have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard and dualcore Intel processor.

I have had no experience with network printers and don't want to have
another problem in setting up a network.

I don't want to buy another printer and find it doesn't work with eCS. I
had a look at the Brother printers but can't find any that say they are
postscript compatible - at least ones that are in my price range. It is
hard to find reliable info even in the manufacturers brochures. Your
warning about Fuji is welcomed but how do I find out more about the
model I mentioned. Can't even find a way to ask the manufacturers of
Fuji and Brother laser printers.

Officeworks have a Brother HL-2170W which has wireless connectivity.
Info says it has PCL 6 Emulation but doesn't mention Postscript 3.
Has printer drivers :
PCL for Windows
Brother laser driver for Mac
GDI for linux

Price $169

Next cheapest model Brother HL-5340D for $349
Emulation PCL 6. BR Script 3 (Postscript 3), IBM Proprinter XL, Epson
FX-850.

Sounds like this last one would be OK but too dear for me so I'm at a
loss as to whether the Brother HL-2170W or the Phaser 3125/N would work
with eCS and my PC.

If I can't find a printer that works I think I'll have to switch to
using Ubuntu as all these problems are taking days to sort out. That
would be a pity as I've used eCS for years.

Regards,

Alan

Hey Paul,

I only saw the prices after responding. I tend to go on market price,
rather than recommended price so the 3125N could drop under the $150
level ! :-)

My point is that one should always research what a printer can do
before purchasing (of course) - it's a shame that there's no database
listing which printers are hos based (WinPrinters) and which are not -
or is there ?

http://www.openprinting dot org is the best database I know - but it's not
100% complete as it's based on user submissions - and it' linux
orientated....

More specifically -
http://www.openprinting dot org/printer/Xerox/Xerox-Phaser_1235 for the
Phaser 1235 (I'm assuming the N just denotes the network version).

It recommends the best driver as being the postscript ppd from xerox -
so it does really seem like the printer does have native postscript support.

Paul

Paul is the expect in this area however I suspect the statement "GDI for
Linux" leads me to suspect that the HL2170W may be a Winprinter.

Perhaps you could check the database that Paul gave a reference to in
his last e-mail.

http://www.openprinting dot org/printer/Brother/Brother-HL-2170W

Recommended driver is pxlmono - the description for this driver is
"Driver for monochrome PCL 6 printers, much faster than the "lj5gray"
drivers." so I think it's also safe to say that this printer supports PCL6.

From my looking around, the market price for this one is hovering around
the $200 level. The only thing that's stopping me from racing out and
buying this one straight away is that Alan mentioned a Brother at a
similar price with wireless connectivity. Perhaps I'll take the details
of both and go to Officworks to take a look.

From what I've seen, it's pretty certain that the 3125N is not a
WinPrinter.

With this one you get a choice. It has both ethernet and non-ethernet
interfaces.

I've just bitten the bullet and bought a Fuji Xerox 3125N printer. I
have other things to do today, so it's still in the box, but I'll report
back soon on how well it worked (or didn't work).

I was greatly tempted by the Brother HL-2170W, which looks a whole lot
better and has wireless connectivity as an option, but in the end my
decision was swayed by the fact that the Brother one doesn't have
Postscript compatibility. (The fact that it was out of stock at
Officeworks was also a factor, and so was the fact that I saw one
not-very-complimentary review on the web.) Maybe I'm being too fussy
here, but in my mind Postscript means better OS independence.

Anyway, in the next day or so I'll be back with a report.

My Epson TX810FW just arrived via Courier too - so I hope to get the
Continuous Ink System and the printer setup this afternoon - depending
on how much rest the puppy has (when he's awake I have to watch him
constantly!!)

I think Postscript or true PCL compatibility gives good cross platform
support possibilities. From what Paul pointed to on the Fuji website
that looks like a good printer, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Please report back and given this is a current model, if it does work
OK, it probably worth adding to the database at eComStation.ru.

That driver is for the Phaser 1235 not the Phaser 3125N which doesn't
have a listing.. I rang Fuji Xerox but they couldn't tell me more than
the brochure. They said that I could buy the Phaser 3125N from
Officeworks and if it didn't work to take it back within 7 days and the
money would be refunded, so I might buy one on Thursday and hope for the
best.
The Brother HL-2170W is $199 not $169 and doesn't have a parallel
connector which I need as eCS is not recognizing any USB ports.
Its info says it has PCL 6 emulation but doesn't mention Postscript 3.
Hence the Phaser 3125N seems my only choice as I couldn't afford the
Brother HL-5340D at $349.

Alan

Done some internet searching and found that I could get the Brother
HL-5340D for $243 delivered. It has a parallel connector as well as high
speed USB 2.0.

Emulation PCL6, BR-script3, IBM Proprinter XL, Epson FX-850.

? what is BR-script 3 and is it similar to postscript 3. Also what is
IBM Proprinter XL?

BR-script is a proprietary Brother scripting language - similar - but not
compatible with postscript.

however, as the printer also supports pcl6 it should work with the laserjet
driver.

eCS already includes a driver for the 1235, but not for the 3125N - but
that's not a problem because the 3125N does come with a PPD file - see
below.

Don't jump in just yet. I've just installed my 3125N, bought today, and
it's not working. Initially the problem was the confusing installation
instructions: I put the toner cartridge in back to front. I've now fixed
that and successfully printed a test page (a built-in function of the
printer). But I can't print from eCS.

This is with a USB connection. (The printer comes with a USB cable, but
not a parallel port cable or ethernet cable.) I wanted to try a parallel
port connection, but the parallel port connector is not compatible with
the only parallel port cable I have. Did the standard for parallel port
connectors change when I wasn't looking? It shouldn't have, because the
other end of the cable happily connects with my PC.

The failure to print with USB might just be a problem with using
USBPRT.SYS, a thing that I've never tried to use before. (That is, I've
never had a USB-connected printer.)

I haven't yet tried it with a network connection. To do that I'll have
to move the printer to my Windows computer, because Windows is needed to
change the IP address. (As supplied, it has an address of
169.254.212.83, a rather strange-looking choice.) I'll try that tomorrow.

The printer driver installation from the PPD file appeared to go OK.
(The utility to do that is in the "Printers" folder in eCS 2.0). The
supplied CD includes 30 different PPD files, for two versions of WinXP
and 15 different languages, but as far as I can tell they're all
identical and do not seem to have any Windows dependencies. After
running the PPD import utility, my list of available printer drivers
includes a "Xerox Phaser 3125 PS", which at least is the right label.

> The Brother HL-2170W is $199 not $169 and doesn't have a parallel
> connector which I need as eCS is not recognizing any USB ports.

I wonder whether that's related to my problem. I have a vague suspicion
that I do have a working printer driver, but a faulty "USB printer"
interface. On the other hand, I do have a working USB disk interface.

By the way, the Officeworks salesman told me that I would have to buy a
USB cable since there wasn't one in the box. I said that was OK, I'd use
the parallel port cable. When I opened the box it was the other way
around: USB cable included, parallel printer cable not included. (But it
did include power cords for 3 different countries!) So what you're told
about what is and is not included might not be right; you can't tell
without opening the box.
