With last night's announcement - maybe that will be Gillard going to the
next election - not Rudd!! Be interesting to see what policy changes are
made assuming Gillard does win..

Interesting times...

I hadn't even thought of testing this until you said that. Now I realise
that something weird is happening. This is with eCS 2.0 GA installable
to a fixed IDE hard drive, formatted as bootable JFS.

First off, I couldn't find the usual "Refresh removable media" object.
Finally located it in the "System Setup" folder, and moved it to the
"Drives" folder where I'm used to having it. (The "Drives" folder is
easy to find on my eCS toolbar now that I've replaced the stupid default
icon by a recognisable "Drives" icon rescued from an old copy of Warp.)

(The Warp 3 drives icon is the most readable of all, but I neglected to
save it in my icon collection. The Warp 4 one is less clear - it's a
diagonal view of a disk, so requires higher resolution to make sense of
it - but it's not too bad. The eCS icon seems to have been designed for
a 5000x5000 screen resolution.)

1. Plugged in a USB stick that was already formatted as HPFS (Drive I:).
Attempted to use "Refresh removable media" a number of times, without
any luck.

2. Opened a command line, used the command "lvm /rediscoverprm". It
didn't work the first time. Tried again, and it worked the second time.

3. Used the command "eject I:". Waited until the light stopped
flickering, then used "lvm /rediscoverprm" several times, none of which
worked.

4. Unplugged the USB stick, then plugged it in again. This time the USB
stick was discovered without my having to issue any command.

Since then, I've been able to get the USB stick recognised by simply
plugging it in, without any command.

Conclusions:
(a) This version of LVM.EXE is buggy. Does anyone know how to submit a
bug report?
(b) There is a daemon running that discovers removable drives, and once
you get it working it keeps working, but it doesn't work initially. I'm
not sure whether I got it working by persisting with the LVM command, or
simply by plugging and unplugging it enough times.

I haven't yet tried rebooting and then plugging in the drive again. I
suspect that after a reboot I will again have to try a number of times
before the drive is recognised.

Dont know if it will fix it but try a manual USB hardware check and
install.

example

[C:\os2\boot]hcimonit.exe
You have 1 PCI USB OHCI host controller(s)
You have 1 PCI USB EHCI host controller(s)

ok, the above tells me I have 1 OHCI and 1 EHCI controller

so in the config.sys file I want

BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBOHCD$,USBEHCD$
[then all the other USB stuff]

People keep telling me to leave the settings off at the end of
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS because it will cause problems or
some other voodoo but I have no idea what USB drivers they
are using, the IBM readme file information seems to be
correct, and it works fine for me.

The main HCD drivers and which ones to use are listed below.
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS (one copy of this statement for each UHCI
controller reported by HCIMONIT)
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS (one copy of this statement for each OHCI
controller reported by HCIMONIT)
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS (one copy of this statement for each EHCI
controller reported by HCIMONIT)

The full USB setup I use is :-

BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBOHCD$,USBEHCD$
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /FLOPPIES:0 /REMOVABLES:4
DEVICE=D:\APPS\tame\usbresmg.sys

but of cause yours will differ depending on devices etc you have.

Hi Ian, Alan,

After 5 years of exclusively using eCS2.0 [betaX|RCx], apart from
occasionally confirminging/disproving points reported by others about
eCS1.2R, I have never in all of that time had the switches on the end of
my USBMSD config.sys line.

Ditto for any remaining W4FP15+/MCP2 volumes.

All of my systems (multi-multi editions on same 250GB HDD) all recognize
_all of my USB-flash sticks/SD[HC]-cards etc_., as well as my one 3.5"
15-partition Maxtor 20GB (was a [Very Low Profile] desktop multi-boot -
one W2K instance - all others bar 3 JFS data volumes are bootable
W4-MCP2-eCS) which is the only 3.5" HDD shallow enough to fit into the
bare enclosure, immediately on insertion/attachment, and I haven't used
the "Refresh Removable Media" object in years. Probably W4FP16 [non-LVM]
or so was the very fastest to mount any USB-MSD media here.

Alan,

Make sure that you have usbresmg.sys entry in config.sys.
Run USBDOCK against your system, and see what hardware it discovers and
recognises (or not?)!

Regards,
Mike

REM'd out the second line but it made no difference. The second line was
put in by the install process.

My system has:
8 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports
2 x IEEE  1394a ports
1 x RJ-45 port

Should my config.sys show "PCI USB OHCI host controllers" instead of
"PCI USB UHCI host controllers" ? I just let the install process choose
the controllers.

Thanks. I found the bug tracker at
http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view_all_bug_page.php (login is necessary).
Meanwhile, however, my USB stick is recognised when I plug it in - no
LVM call necessary - so there is no longer a bug to report. I'll just
have to keep an eye on whether this can be reproduced.

I did have a glitch where this drive appeared to be empty, but CHKDSK
fixed the problem.
