Subject: No anti-virus software? No internet connection

I am not having a good day today,

<Rant mode>

No anti-virus software? No internet
connection.

<http://www.news dot com dot au/technology/no-anti-virus-software-no-internet-conne
ction/story-e6frfro0-1225882656490>

This is just getting so ridiculous.

And the scary thing is the NBN will enable all of this and more, as it
will have
the speed to overcome bottle necks introduced by Mandatory filtering,
URL, web history, and email scrapping (Gov denies this but those on the
ISP list confirm this is what they were told).

If the the Government is really so concerned why dont they just start
opening
up all snail mail as well, and look at filtering all the scams that arrive
in
the letterbox while they are at it.

Honestly, I though Australia was a democracy, not a dictatorship
with a control fetish. A land were a person had responsibility for
their own destiny and didnt need to be lead around on a lease.

Where do they get these ideas, and just how many commitees
has Rudd & Co set up ? And it has taken them a year to come
up with this !
</Rant mode>

"And if their computer did get infected, internet service providers like
Telstra and Optus would cut off their connection until the problem was
resolved."

I will point out that the big ISP's are looking at the bit above already
and trying to figure out the legalities and SA's that would need
to be changed, it does NOT require government to get involved,
not does it require tax payers to fund it or a committee to think
about it.

On the humor side,

The answers simple, ban Windows, so much cheaper, easier,
and quicker, then you only have to worry about all those people
that have weak passwords :o)

'I, Rudd, know exactly what I'm doing, and what YOU should
be doing, using, and thinking'

"ISPs must actively monitor the security of users' machines and block them
from connecting if their browser, security and operating system software
is not up to standards"

My experience tells me any choice greater than 2 confuses governments,
so that would be 'Internet Exploder' or 'Firefox' ,maybe ?

MS Windows, and Apple Mac, maybe ?

So it becomes illegal to connect Linux, Unix, OS/2 to a domestic
internet connection ?

I dont think we need worry, it will take then a few years to clarify :o)

Send a virus and if they start flooding the network with Spam they're
using Windows and have no Anti-virus installed.

If he really wants to cleanup the Internet, he could just have all
Windows systems blocked from accessing the net .......

The traffic on AusNOG has been so busy lately, I cant keep up.

They are already talking about how easy it is to set up
systems that report other systems are compromised by
spoofing IP's mac's etc, and the sort of mischieve that
could be achieved.

IT has also been pointed out once more that the ISP
industry, including IIA have NOT been consulted on
any of this, just like everything else.

My apologies if you are a Rudd supporter but you have
to face facts, he and his government totally lost it a while
ago, and its getting worse every week. Some one needs
to go check the water supply to the labor offices me thinks.

I just cant stand anymore increase in AusNOG and AusISP
list mail, the Olympus OM List use to be bad with upto 300
emails a day at one stage.

Being an ex mining industry worker was bad enough, now I
feel like the government will tell me I am only allowed
to run a Windows Server because they cant monitor anything
else :o)

Insanity used to be hereditary - you caught it from your kids, but now it's
political.

I would love to dare them to experiment with getting standard malware to
successfully attack and compromise my system (ahem, I might not actually
tell them it isn't a Windows machine, though!).

Hi Ian,

You should know I'm not a supporter of any Politician irrespective of
which party and my comment that you quoted was a jibe at Windoze - not
at ISPs.

I agree with you that slapping legislation on ISPs, making them
responsible for what their customers do is a stupid idea. An analogy
would be to tell the water board they are responsible that all people
drinking their water do not commit any crimes - that would be ludicrous
about as ludicrous as holding ISPs responsible for what goes on, on the
internet.

I vote for the platform, so I could be called a swinging voter :-)

Sorry, I know re the windoz jibe, I probably could have seperated
it better.

AFACT are still aiming to overturn the iinet ruling, and also remember
that the Federal Labour Government did go into the court case as
a 'Friend of the Court' on AFACT's side.

Looking at what else is happening it puts the above in a new light
doesnt it :-)

I remember the old Sysop/Bulletin board days with 9600baud
modems and 10-12k download/upload speeds, then we joined
a few of them up in a loose decnet network, and in about 1988 we
discovered um, what was it called before AOL bought them ?

Hmm, we could be doing this again as internet mark II :o)
[Unless non regulated communications is deemed illegal].

Well some say that the aim of facebook is to create a "walled garden" -
but with the lost trust through them changing users settings without
telling them and selling their information to commercial organisations,
I suspect many will do as I have done and left facebook.

Whatever happened to Internet-II that was indeed talk about at the the
turn of the century? The current configuration will at some point not be
able to expand any further, whether it be overloaded network links, IP
address space issues (IPv4) or DNS server overload.

Hi Ed,

That was it, Compuserv.

>able to expand any further, whether it be overloaded network links, IP

Internet II as was talked about previously is just the standard
internet slowly evolving.

IPv6 is here now, and you can use IPv6 if you are with internode,
most other ISP's are lagging badly though :-(

Other links of interest :-
<https://sites.google dot com/site/ipv6implementors/2010/agenda>

If you dont do much with IPv4, then you probably dont need to
be to concerned, as CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) such
as your home router will require upgrading to a new model, that
will provide IPv4 and IPv6 side by side, with an internal IPv4
NAT option.
