I suspect someone has done a copy-and-paste from some earlier
announcement. Let's remember that OpenOffice was previously known as
StarOffice - and that's still reflected in some file names - and that
originally it was available ONLY for OS/2. The Linux and Windows
versions came well after the OS/2 version.

As it happens, I do have version 3.1 on my computer, but only because
I've paid for an OO support agreement. At least it still is available,
even if we have to pay for it.

On the negative side, version 3.1 crashes on some documents that I wrote
with version 2.4. I suspect that it's because I write documents with
lots of equations, and the equation editor has always been a weak point
of OO. It's far superior, in terms of ease of use, to Microsoft's
equation editor; but it also has a tendency to crash.

I have to say that OO is exceptionally good at producing technically
complicated HTML documents. See, for example, my article
http://www.pmoylan dot org/pages/articles/probability/Probability.html

which contains both equations and charts from spreadsheets.

Subject: Java, Palm, DateBk and Pimlical

just a curiosity of no significance:

I use an app called DateBk on my Palm, a very fine calendar app;

the developer of DateBk has created a 'Desktop for Palm' app called
Pimlical, which is essentially a high end PIM that can also be used as a
Desktop for Palm (replacement for Palm provided app)

the new app, Pimlical, is a Java app, as it eventually meant to be a cross
platform app for just about any device.

it requires the latest Java, and, currently only ships for windoze

well, using the various recipes that were posted here, I've got Pimlical
running on my OS/2 desktop, displaying my Palm data

well, kinda running, it throws up some erros on the way up, and, some more
on the way down. but, it does start up

like I said, just a curiosity of no significance

AHA! - I see what is happening - the website is inquiring against the
browser that you are running and then puts in the operating system name
in the text - if I go to this site from a Windoze box it says OOo v 3.10
for Windows.

Still won't print.
I have these lines in my config.sys relating to USB apart from 2 lines
associated with mouse and keyboard:

DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBPRT.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:1

In my startup folder I have a folder for Removable Device Monitor V1.2
but no folder for USBMON. I assume they are similar.
In the properties window of this program are:
Path and File Name:   C:\ECS\BOOT\USBMSDD.EXE
Working Directory:   C:\ECS\BOOT

I have added the parameter USBPRT

Also made a USB port in the printer dialog and installed my printer to
this port.

What else can I do? Does it matter which USB port I plug into?

Regards,

Alan

Is the cable a pure hardware device ? What does the documentation with
it say - if it says to install a windows driver, then it's not a pure
hardware device and it wont work with anything apart from Windoze.

And it's not in that list!

so what is happening is that the webpage is asking the firefox browser,
what OS is running and then inserts that in the text on the screen.

It's a while since I bought it and I don't think it had any
documentation with it. I'm sure I used it on one of my previous ECS
installations on an ASUS M3A box and was surprised that it worked.
However I've shelved that system as I couldn't configure ACPI & SMP on
it. Just to check, I resurrected that box and did all the above but
couldn't access the printer so I don't know what else I did that was
different.

Hi,

I've just downloaded Open Office v3.1.0 from the Mensys site and
installed it. I was disappointed with it, as it's slower to load than
OOo2.4 and crashes if I try to open *.sdw files from StarOffice 5.1. In
fact I tend to use StarOffice more than OpenOffice as it's quicker
loading and does a good job of reading *.doc files. Each new version of
OOo seems to be getting slower as the version prior to OOo2.4 was quicker.
Lotus Smartsuite is quickest of all but is not good at reading *.doc files.

Regards,

Alan

they're program objects Alan, not folders!

Hi Alan,

That's the USB M(ass)S(storage)D(Device) monitor you incorrectly added
the USBPRT parameter to!
That parameter is what goes on a program object referencing
?:\os2\usbmon.exe

My systems here have two files called usbmon.exe as follows:

OS/2      Ctrl+Esc = Window List       Type HELP = help
Tue 23/06/2009 20:02:47.13 AEST
[512MB RAM J:\Desktop]dir ..\usbmon.exe /s

The volume label in drive J is ECSV20RC4-J.
The Volume Serial Number is 0963:D5C4.

Directory of J:\OS2

25/08/05 11:28         19,477      0 a---  usbmon.exe
        1 file(s)      19,477 bytes used

Directory of J:\OS2\BOOT

10/09/04 15:50         51,233    342 a---  USBMON.EXE
        1 file(s)      51,233 bytes used
Total files listed:
        2 file(s)        70,710 bytes used
                     95,145,984 bytes free

Tue 23/06/2009 20:03:07.42 AEST
[512MB RAM J:\Desktop]

The first of those is the USB printer monitor, the other in os2\boot is
related to LVM (HDD and MSD), and in fact is superseded by
?:\ECS\BOOT\USBMSDD.EXE - the one you already have in the Startup Folder.

Regards,
Mike

OK, if it worked before with eCS it must be a pure hardware device, so
that's good.

When you go into install printer / create printer, is a USB Port shown
with the name of your printer (or perhaps the printer cable) under it ?
It'll be blue USB letters across the top, then the plug symbol and then
something (not just USB) underneath it.

If you don't have this, go to \ecs\system\usbdock and run usbdock - can
it see the device ? If not you have a physical USB connectivity problem.

If it does see something (it'll give a vendor and model code) - then we
are a step closer.

USB removable device monitor is the program that pops up the drive X:
has been attached when you plug in a USB memory key - it is not the
printer monitor that you need to run.

USBMON should be in either \OS2 or \OS2\BOOT directory, if it's not in
either of those it suggests to me that because of how you installed this
system, you did not include usb printing support and you'll need to
install usb printer support. I'm not sure how you do this under eCS -
logically it'd be through selective install but given that eCS has it's
own install procedures, the OS/2 selective install may not work. the
other option would have been to download the USB Printing package from
Software Choice, but that's closed, so perhaps from eComstation dot com or
os2site dot com ?

I'm pretty sure the OOo/2 v 3.1 is still beta code, so a release version
might be quicker.

Alan,

I have already read Ed's response and I fear he is right.
I have a similar problem.
My OS/2 and XP boxes work off an old switch box with a serial port for the
mouse. My old ball mouse is giving me the creeps having to clean it all the
time; so I thought I would get around this with a serial to USB adapter on
the switch box. When investigating them ( adapters) I found they had only
windows drivers.
Things no longer work the way serial/ps2 adapters do ...

With regds.,

Mike

It has blue USB letters across the top, then the plug symbol and

I did a search and no USBMON was found.
When I plug in a USB memory key the program pops up to show the drive
attached so I presume the Event Monitor assumes this function.
