Yes but does this mean the end of Java, VirtualBox and OpenOffice and who
knows what else (anyone care about Solaris anymore?)? Doubtful a problem
on OO since it is an open source project, but IBM's history of buying
companies and then you never see the products again is troubling.

IBM are less guilty of that practice than Microsoft however Java is
likely safe given how much of IBM's consulting business is built
around it. Of more concern would be Glassfish and NetBeans both of
which compete directly with IBM products. Other things like JavaFX vs.
EGL and possibly Swing vs. SWT.

Simon Coulter.

Somewhat premature talk.

I did wonder about the anti trust myself. MS will cry foul to leverage more
market share.

Java, absolutely not, IBM is too committed to it.

VirtualBox, who knows

mySQL, probably not (but should), as the code is out there, by keeping it
alive they offer some semblance of steerage and control.

OO no. OO is being pushed more and more internally.

I'd argue that MS buys companies to bury them. IBM takes the best bits and
merges them into their own offerings either internally or still as a
produce in their own right.
