I checked whether I can change foreground to background printing under
1-2-3 but is appears that can only be down under Wordpro. For your info
this is what is says in the help for Wordpro:

"Background Printing

Prevents Word Pro from printing documents in the background. If
background printing is enabled, Word Pro uses a background task to print
and, as a result, you are able to continue working while the document
prints. You are also able to control the print jobs in Word Pro's spool
by activating the printer icon on the status bar. If background printing
is disabled, Word Pro sends the document to the OS/2 print spooler
before you can continue working. You must use the OS/2 print spooler to
control multiple print jobs."

It does not appear to have an effect on 1-2-3.

What happens if you do a Preview & Page setup? Can you select a printer
in the print dialog box from the properties window that is displayed?

Ken

No, I can't select a printer. When the printer button is pressed in the
print dialog box of the Preview and Page setup window the Printer window
flashes for a split second and disappears. The Print dialog box displays
part of the printer name as 'HPDeskje' instead of 'HPDeskjet960C'
when the printer tab of that window is pressed.
I've just found that I can print the spreadsheet if I open the Preview
window and click the Quick print button but still can't print by
selecting Print from the File dialog as no Printer window is displayed.

Hi Alan

The only other thing I can think of is, are there any error messages in
popuplog.os2

Two things worth considering:

1. Have you tried sliding the main window sideways to see whether the
printer window is still there, but hidden underneath the main window?
Some applications I use - IBM Works is a notorious example - open their
popups underneath existing windows, so you don't even know they're there
unless you do a search. There were bug reports about this back in the
OS/2 version 2.0 days, but the response was always "working as
designed". (New windows are _supposed_ to appear at the bottom of the
z-order, and applications that break that (i.e. the majority) are not
following the design guidelines. Or so they said.)

2. The truncation of the printer name to 8 characters might mean that
Lotus Smartsuite is one of those applications that can handle only 8.3
file names. (It was written for a very old version of OS/2.) If so, you
might have better luck if you change the printer name to make it shorter.

Personally, I'd just junk the whole package and use OpenOffice. I tried
Lotus Smartsuite long ago, and hit so many examples of bad design that I
decided I was better off without it. (OpenOffice wasn't an option back
then, but I had a copy of MS-Excel that was compatible with OS/2, and
Excel is one of the very few Microsoft products that works properly.)
Lotus software was excellent up until the time they tried to produce GUI
applications, and they went rapidly downhill from there.

There are no popup printing window under the main window.

Didn't help. However I tried to delete the existing printer driver to
reinstall it again and couldn't as dialog said it was used by other
printers and I noted that I have 5 copies of my HP960 printer icon,
probably from previous installations. I can't find any way to delete them.

OpenOffice 1.15 seems OK but OpenOffice2 doesn't work well and crashes
frequently.
