Subject: KVM woes, hangs on boot

I am having weired probs with KVM:

I've decided that I need a full-time windoze PC, to facilitate use of Palm
(Bluetooth and HotSync)

so, I got a (cheap) KVM switch, metal box.
I kinda worked for a few days, then: the windoze machine was getting rapis
spurious keystrokes, to the point, desktop objects were being renamed,
machine was unsuable

the OS/2 machine wouldn't fully boot, desktop came up, then, it 'froze';
mouse worked, but, desktop wouldn't react to it.

I've tried another (same brand) KVM, same probs

reverted to swapping cables over

now, got another (inexpensive) KVM switch (crappy stylized platcic box)

it worked for a couple days, and....:

- OS/2 again freezes on bootup
- windoze working so far, though, yesterday, in an ssh (Putty) session,
got spurious kystrokes...

any thoughts ?
(do I need a higher priced KVM...?)

First thing I'd try is a different keyboard. You've replaced the KVM
itself, so now it's time to look at the other components.

It could be a bad contact on one wire to the keyboard (tolerences
between keyboard plug pin size and KVM socket hole size). Or a damaged
core in the Keyboard cable which when in the position needed to go into
the kvm breaks a joint.

If you have a different keyboard, try changing to that.

Hi Voytek

I asume that the keyboard and mouse are not USB.

I resorted to having two mice.

I've alreay replace the Compaq keybd with a Digital keybd (with the last KVM)
I might try the Compaq kybd again...

though, I might try the 'old' rotary KVM as well
on my home PC, the emulation bootability is not much of an issue

PS2 keyboard, Compaq and Digital
Genius USB > PS2 adapter into KVM

to make it more complex, the windoze pc is 'usb-only'.... so, the windoze
(*not* OS/2) has 'usb>ps2+ps2' to accept PS2 keyboard)

Hi Voytek,

Don't you have a PS/2 --> 6-pin DIN converter that would allow you to
use the rotary KVM?
Haven't bought one for some years, but they were pretty cheap from e.g.
PAW products.

I use a rotary switch type KVM, when I changed to a USB mouse, the
USB>PS2 adaptor would not work, and so I then got an extra mouse and now
have two mice on my desk.
I have no idea why it didn't work.

Hi Voytek

I use a cheapie 2 port KVM ($28.90) switching between eCS and Linux.
It's a "CS-62 Petite KVM Switch". My keyboard is a really old (>10 yrs)
genuine IBM - the nice clickety ones with the individually serviceable
gold contacts, and my mouse is an M$, USB 5 button Intellimouse with a
scrolly wheeel. I use the USB to PS/2 adapter that came with the mouse.
The keystrokes to switch machines are programmable, with the default
being double scroll-lock hits. This thing hasn't given me a moment's
trouble since I bought it about 4 months ago, and I use it many times
each day. Google "CS-62 Petite" and you'll find it.

Cheers
Kev

Windows isn't the answer. Windows is the question. The answer is NO!
We use and recommend Xandros Linux v3.0.1.
Linux IS user friendly - it's just selective about who its friends are

The reason it wont work is that the mouse will only (re)nogoitate the
[mouse] protocol at POST. Once it's been disconnected, via the KVM
switch it gets electriclty disconnected, thus you end up with a dead
mouse. The protocol between the PS/2 port and mouse has been broken.

So when I just pulled the plug of my USB mouse and then plugged it into
a different USB socket it should have stopped working instead of
allowing me to restart Thunderbird and write and post this message.

in my experience, PS2 rodents can be un & re-plugged, with no ill effects
(as long as they were present at boot)

My findings are the same as Voytek's.

Sometimes it take 5-10 seconds for the system to realise the mouse is
back however.

It depends very much on the hardware.

The 8 port KVM I use keeps the correct signals on video, mouse, and
keyboard plugs when that particular one isnt switched as current, this
ensures that I can even reboot everything without bothering to switch
the KVM to it. I use to manually move PS/2 mouse and KB between
different computers but found that some would nolonger see the mouse
if it had been unplugged for a while, and I'd have to reboot the machine
in question.

It very much comes down to your hardware, your BIOS, and I suspect
that the mouse driver may have a bit of input as well.

amouse quiet happily fines a USB kensington when I plug it in the USB
port, and both PS/2 and USB mice work at the same time.

Cheers
