Subject: System Lockups

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced, or know about; system lock ups when a window
touches the bottom of the screen in esc 1.1. I first noticed this with
the information and help system as it is placed directly on the bottom
of the screen, and I've tried to drag it to a more central location,
but it seems to be all windows. As soon as one touches the bottom edge:
lockup. I thought it might have someting to do with multiple desktops,
but even disabling this has no effect, the simptom still persists.

Cheers
G

Hi Gavin,

Your eCS 1.1 system is fscked! I frequenty pull full-height windows
[e.g. Mozilla Mail composition windows] down so only top 1/2" is showing
at the bottom of the screen [to check something in the original
message], and never have this behaviour exhibited!

Gavin,

Mind you I have multiple pages of desktop icons and folders extending
below the bottom of all primary desktop screens, and in some cases above
that screen too.

Hi Gavin,

Having never experienced that problem, possibly because of what I wrote
in my second response, the only thing I could suggest would be to revert
to an os2.ini/os2sys.ini backup set. Do you have Unimaint to give the
inis a complete work-over?

Hi Gavin,

I've sent you privately my own howto to get a 1024 x 2304 desktop [3
pages 1024 x 768] as an example, plus current information about Unimaint
contact/current version etc. Started this non-stop session at 4 AM, so
off to get some sleep soon, as that was yesterday's 4AM.

Subject: Zampa

Hi all (and one)

I'm running eCS 1.2. I have an ADSL connection coming through a
router/firewall/switch. I was wanting to set up a 2nd line of defence
on each machine in the form of a software firewall, and immediately
thought of Zampa. I pulled out my old eCS 1.0 CD to get Zampa which I
installed OK. However, when I try to run it (ZAMPA.EXE) I get the error
message ...

"This program requires eComStation to run"

1. Has anyone tried to use Zampa since eCS 1.0?
2. Is there an equivalent or alternative in eCS 1.2?

I've Googled Zampa, but the web site doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I've found a much older ZAMPA.EXE on Hobbes (24Jan2000 on Hobbes vs
15May2001 from the eCS 1.0 CD).

Can anyone out there help me please?

Thanx in advance
Kev Downes

You could use Injoy Firewall as an alternative.

Do you recall if that was part of eCS at any time? I know the InJoy
dialler was. I was thinking of Zampa simply because I already own it
and figure I'd have to buy anything else.

Thanx

There are also OS/2 site docs at
http://www.os2site dot com/sw/internet/firewall/firewall_doc_v13.zip
for the "inbuilt" firewall in the TCP/IP stack, which I use.

That same directory has other txt files of rules which you can use as models,
plus Injoy and Zampa10b for TCP/IP 4.1 and up.

But there is also an article by Bas Heijermans about security (including
reference to firewalls) in OS/2 E-zine
http://www.os2ezine dot com/20030316/page_6.html
He puts another useful slant on things - you have to know what the traffic
*means* to be able to intelligently use a firewall/filtering or any other
security setup.

Hi Kev,
No it didn't come with eCS - only the V2.30 dialler.

Here is at least one location for Zampa
http://www.mo.himolde.no/~ltning/os2/index.htm
However, Zampa is used to configure the OS/2- ECS builtin firewall is it
not??

If so, then I have just today been using "ServerConfig19.zip" available
on Hobbes, which works pretty well..
