Paul,

reading the csUSB docs, cw USB doesn't suppport EHCI, amd I correct in
that ? only OHCI.

I'll try it anyhow, just concerned about potentiall speed loss

this seems a bit like 'IDE drives are faster than SCSI'

no, I mean, when exiting/save LVM (i.e. F3/save), the PC instanly reboots....

ever since I started stuffing around with this stick, that's what happens,
any LVM alteration on stcik, when esiting LVM F3/sabe, reboots the PC

I think I'll reformat stick with supplied utilies and, start afresh

A lot of that argument is because of the generally larger caches on SCSI
drives.

Hi Voytek,

As this procedure shouldn't be writing any "changes" to your HDD-MBR,
have you considered using the utility from DANI - comes with DANIS506
package - think it's diskinfo.exe - that allows you to "write-protect"
cylinder-0 i.e. your MBR on HDD?

I thought it was more to do with dedicated processor and logic;
and, you hang, last time I looked, 14 drives of a scsi controler versus ide

wasn;t aware of this; I need to re-read Danis's docs, now that I'm going
to IDE.

well, I was forced to it, my old system was all-scii: cd rom, cdrw, dat, hd;

then Sony CDR wouldn't read CDRWs...;
so, I had to put an IDE CDR; but was still using external Yama CDRW;
when I saw the Teak for 32$.... 50x vs Yama 4 x...

say; should I put cdrw/cdr on prim/sec, rather than , both on 1 controller ?
the hds are still scsi

do cdr/cdrw support the high density ribbons things ?

W-SCSI does has that advantage -- 15 drives+controller [0-7[HBA]-15]
(per channel!)
Sequential access is a lot different to random - EIDE can be faster than
SCSI under certain conditions [given same drive specifications & brand]

Probably won't make any significant difference, but you could put the
current primary slave as master on the secondary, in view of the fact
that you have no other EIDE HDD at this time, so IRQ15/port 0170h are
unused.

Hi Voytek,

Even 52x  CD-R* have a max read-rate of 52*150KB/sec = ~7.8MB/sec <<
UDMA2-3 [33MB-44MB/sec] which is the upper limit of 40-wire cables.
80-wire cables needed for UDMA4-5-6 [66-100-133MB/sec], so not really a
problem having 40-wire cables for quite a while yet!

I was told that a sound card is included and that there is an outlet for networking. The shop assistants
couldn't give me any further information. They said Acer makes their own components which I doubt. Maybe
further info could be gleaned from the internet. The model is Acer Inspire and I was told that it is a new model
and not a run out model. WIN XP iloaded.

Thanks for the research Alan. I'm thinking of upgrading the wife's PC and wondering
whether I'd be better buying a cheap PC like this, for myself and passing my system on to
her - this means that the new system would need to be able run eCS of course, hence the
questions.

I always used to build my own systems but at the prices nowadays, it's not really worth it
!

Subject: Internet access via unwired and ecs

Hi all

Just thought I would let others know of my success with using unwired
for internet access. Actually the ISP is Veritel and they use the
Unwired network.

I received the modem this morning and had to do some reconfiguration of
my Internet machine which was connecting to a Cisco router and then to
the Internet via ISDN.

Basically the modem connects via ethernet to my machine and using injoy
firewall and PPPOe I was able to connect and logon. It's good to have a
1024/256k connection instead of 64k. I still have some playing around to
do to make sure I have it all configured correctly as it is supposed to
use DHCP but without configuring "use a previous ip address" start up
halts with the message about not locating a DHCP server.

When I get everything working as I would like I will send in another
report.

regards
Ken

That's good input Ken ! I thought Unwired would simply be using standard WiFi
adapters but if they supply an ethernet connectable modem with PPoE authentication,
that's the same as ADSL as far as the system is concerned (I think). It'd be
interesting to see if it would work using eCONet - the software that comes with eCS
1.2 rather than Injoy, if possible. As for the DHCP issue, make sure the dhcp client
is starting.

Hi,

Does anyone still get fixpacks for warp4, or have you all switched to ecs?
What is the status of fixpacks? Can we still access them without being
part of software choice (which I thought was ceasing).

Finally even if we can get them will they fix ecs or do we have to wait
for the next ecs upgrade?

Latest Warp 4 version is Convienience Pack 2 at fixpack 4 and you are correct, this is
only obtainable if you have a Software Choice subscription. Software Choice is
dissapearing and IBm are staying with the Passport Advantage service offering as how
you will be able to get the next fixpacks, driver updates etc.

Passport Advantage is really aimed at corporations. The simplest, cheapest and best
way to get access is through an eCS software subscription. The fixpacks and driver
updates produced for OS/2 Warp 4 also apply to eCS as eCS is a "value add" version of
OS/2 Warp 4.

You shouldn't need econet for ADSL connection. Al least I don't think I do.

I used it for the dial-up modem, when I changed over to ADSL, I replaced my network router with the router modem. The modem-router used the same IP address as the router, so I only had to log into the modem-router web server and configure the modem and bingo.

Dennis.

Yes David. I didn't check my eMail until after I had typed and sent my last eMails. As you have found the Acer
Aspire T310 to be very satisfactory I'm now toying with the idea of buying one myself. I'd like to be able to use
voice to contact a friend in the country. Costs too much phoning. I think I would need WIN XP or Linux to
install the programs. Only have WIN 95 at present and not enough space to install either of these.
One thing I didn't check - Does the Acer Aspire have a parallel port?

Yes I was referring to anti Spyware. I thought there was one such program called "Spyware" for Windows.

My reason for this request is that I have been receiving eMails from Yahoo thanking me for my mail to FreeOs
