Would it make sense for Os2 dot org dot au to take over the OS2.ORG domain name
and what would it cost ?

Why not? it's worth a try!

Don't know about cost. In Aust dot org doesn't.

But what's on the site and what would they want the new "owners" to
maintain?

Hi All,

The cost of os2 dot org dot au is currently $33 per two years, plus our web site costs

I suspect that we may have to pay someone somewhere for the privilege of presence.

regards

Greg

Ta, Bob.

It used to be OK. I wonder if we are having trouble with Optus?

Michael here was having trouble today with slow loading of sites that he
normally goes to - trains and planes.

Anyone who is NOT using Optus cable in Melbourne could you please give this
os2 dot org site a try, and let us all know what you find - if anything.

Subject: [os2genau] OS/2 SIG Report March 2003 Meeting

Hi Gary.

Following is a report for March as requested.

It doubles as a report to our mailing list, so it will be over the length
limit. I have chopped a bit already, made it into point form in parts etc.
We had a lot in the meeting, so if space is a problem in this issue, please
email me - otherwise we would appreciate it if you could fit it all in.

Best regards

Melbourne PC SIG Meeting Report
To: G Taig Features Editor PC Update
CC: OS/2 SIG Members
Report Date: 26 Mar 2003
Meeting Date: 25 Mar 2003
Report by: John Angelico (03) 9544 8792

In our March meeting we enjoyed a good attendance, and were also favoured
with the quiet presence of SIG Co-Ordinator Dennis Olsen sitting in on
proceedings.

Latest News
Major software releases recently:
	eCS version 1.1
	Lotus Smartsuite 1.7.1 for OS/2
IBM Web Browser based on Mozilla 1.3
	Mozilla v1.3b
	Phoenix 0.5 ("Mozilla-lite") for OS/2

Website redesigns:
	eCS website ecomstation dot com
Orion Solutions orion-solutions dot com dot au and ecomstation dot com dot au
Phoenix OS/2 Society possi dot org (excellent use of style sheets, a
great Arizona colour scheme - definitely worth seeing in a late-model
browser)

The SIG has published a page on the MelbPC web servers, and we are now due
for a revision of our main site

OS/2-eCS and Java software continues to be released and improved
All SIG members are recommended to subscribe to VoiceNews via os2world dot com.
NewView v2.28 drop-in replacement for the Help File viewer
GSView v4.32 beta PDF viewer, printer and creator - for light use
you wouldn't know it was a beta, printing is particularly fast, and it
copes very well with file format problems
Multimedia releases come steadily - too many to list here, but
including video, MP3, CD audio, digital cameras and streaming data

Sad news of Connectix (developers of Virtual PC) being taken over by
Microsoft and losing all their staff to the giant. There is some discussion
in newsgroups of Innotek (developers of Flash for OS/2) being caught in the
backwash

Desktop On Call:
Ian Manners our presenter struggled to get the demo package working but it
appears to be hard-coded in such a way that we could not get it working
locally between two machines, and we could not organise internet access to
suit its requirements

Hardware:
Bob Traynor showed a device he described as "definitely the best thing
since sliced bread!" A plug-on card to connect an IDE device to a SCSI
adaptor, available very economically from Harris Technologies.
Email him on rtraynor at optusnet dot com dot au for a detailed explanation of how to
buy it from Harris.

Software Mini-demos:
WarpCalc shareware calculator - fast, compact, business, scientific
and programming features. The developer has generously supplied us with a
SIG registration, so anyone interested can email talldad at kepl dot com dot au to
obtain a registered copy.
SmartCache, a freeware Java web cache and forwarder, designed
originally to improve on the reputedly poor caching of Netscape. Plenty of
options, good security, smooth caching, fine tuning to your heart's
content. Latest version is available from Radim Kolar at
http://home.worldonline.cz/~cz210552/

After the break, Bob resumed with an extended discussion of hard drive
physical and data layout, and emphasised the importance of correct use of
tools such as AirBoot, LVM, Fdisk, Partition Magic, and the risks of
disaster by failing to protect your data with a TESTED BACKUP. Lively
discussion followed, and there will be a further topic of Backup Strategies
in a later meeting.

Next Meeting: April 22nd
Main Topic: eCS v1.1 release with Mark Rogers of Orion Solutions
