Subject: [os2genau] New toy -Best thing since sliced bread.!

Hi All,

I have a mixture of IDE and Ultr160 and scsi 2 system.
Win98se, WinXP and Os/2 and eCS.

I ordered from Harris Technologies last week a new toy
for the computer. I was helping a friend with his computer
yesterday and I got him to drop me off at Office Works
to pick it up afterwards. (still no car - hope to pick it
up tomorrow). Harris Technology have an outlet in the
Oakleigh Office Works store.

I ordered the adapter and as part of the on-line shopping,
chose to "pickup from store" and pay on pickup.
No CREDIT CARD required.! I did have to register prior to
placing the order, which took a day or so.

It is a IDE to SCSI to IDE. $99.00 Australian.

Some info here:-
http://www.ht dot com dot au/Scripts/xworks.exe?PART:E0697

I have all 4 possible IDE devices running in my system.
2 hard drives and 1 Pioneer DVD reader and 1 LG CDRW burner.

The old tray mounted Zip drive (which could be swapped
with a LS-120 drive) had to be disconnected when the DVD
went in, as there was no available IDE connection.
The adapter means that the removable tray is now
connected to the low speed scsi 50 pin cable and works
as normal.

Windows 98 and XP and OS/2 all think it is a genuine
scsi drive. The Zip drive appears to work as normal
but the LS-120 is a fraction slower.

Of course, to change the ZIP drive for the LS-120
I have to power off, replace the tray and reboot.
And vice versa.

Apparently just about anything IDE can be accessed as
scsi with this adapter. There is a caveat in the
instructions to do with CDRW drives though.
Apparently some software burning packages may
have problems.

So they advise not to fit IDE CDRW's to the adapter
unless desperate.

I presume DVD burner drives would also have problems.
(Don't have one yet.)

Harris Technologies was the only store I could find in
Australia that would even take the order, let alone
get one in for me.

Very readily available in the USA but at double the
price as compared to the one I got here, strangely
enough. Most I located in USA wanted from US$ 120 and up.

Regards to All,

Robert Traynor (BobT).

Ed / Daryl,
Polarbar has all those functions.
However I have to tell you to read the manual 'cos I don't use them.
I am however bias as Polarbar is the best email client bar none and what sets
it apart is the great help from the volunteers that develop and support it.
Truely a better group you couldn't find.

Regards,
Michael

P.S. Composed with Polarbar 1.24c, Java 1.18 and OS/2

yep.

About Polarbar

Who we are:

The Polarbar Mailer is a volunteer-based project team located around the
world. It is a 100% pure Java application, originally designed and created
by a company named Innoval. When Innoval decided to give up development of
the original product (then known as J Street Mailer), there was still a core
group of 10 or 12 users who monitored the mailing list. Two of those users
were Paul van Keep and Mike Bowler who decided to take on the task of
continuing the development effort. Innoval gave them permission and that
began the Polarbar organization.

Origin of the name:

Back in the dark ages, when Microsoft was small and IBM thought OS/2 was the
future an executive from Prime quit his job and decided to start a software
developer conference focussed on OS/2. This became the ColoradOS/2
conference held for the first year in January 1993. The second conference,
in November of that same year, and every conference after that, was
unofficially concluded by having a Friday afternoon party in the hot tub
with lots of good malt. This hot tub happening came to be known as the
Polarbar club. Paul van Keep and Mike Bowler knew each other from that
conference and so Mike thought it would be appropriate to take Polarbar as
the name for the mailer. That is how Polarbar came to be known as Polarbar.

Subject: [os2genau] Polarbar

Greetings all,
Yes Polarbar originated from JStreet Mailer.
Back when I used Post Road Mailer (OS/2 native from Innoval) I started having
problems with large attachments.
The options from Innoval were go up one version of PRM or go to the way of the
future a java mailer.
So I took the java approach. It was beta but I was brave back then.
Oops.
On my 300 MHz K6 with 128 Meg of RAM it ran like a dog.
Some time down the track and many beta releases later I loaded Daniella's fix
for OS/2 to see all the RAM.
Suddenly JStreet actually ran almost reasonable.
Then Innoval dropped it like a hot rock.
I was sitting in limbo until Paul Van Keep and the team came along.
The work they have done is nothing short of a miracle.
Support is the best I've had from anyone for anything.
They are always willing to listen to suggestions for new versions and they
never get tired of answering the same questions over and over.
Quite simply I'm sold on it.
When I demo'ed Polarbar to the MelbPC SIG some 18 months to 2 years ago several
people asked me very probing questions about functions that their favorite
mailer had.
I didn't know if they were there as I hadn't needed them but I was glad to find
that everything that was requested was there.
It's come along way from there.
For those who cop a lot of spam then you should go to the www.polarbar dot org site
and follow the links to the sites about Baysian Filtering which Polarbar now
has.
This spam filter uses probability on the subjects and contents of emails to
weed out the duds.
The testimonies of those who use this are stunning.

So I guess I've rabbited on enough now so I'll leave with
www.polarbar dot org

Best Wishes to all.

Regards,
Michael
