The default setting for the JFS IFS is as follows:

IFS=C:\OS2\JFS.IFS /AUTOCHECK:*

The +driveletter is really for use on the HPFS IFS to force a full checkdisk on particular drives each
time the system is booted. JFS works differently - it always runs it's "chkdsk" (ie it checks the
transaction logs to see if a chkdsk is needed), so the + command is redundant.

Hi Ian,

no, didn't "jag it". i used a maint partition (OS/2 of course) and removed the +.....
this was implied in the first e-mail... boot not going past the nic driver.. no pm gets up...

you need to picture the problem...

power on
Video BIOS
BIOS Mem Test
BIOS Messages (found hd1 etc)
Looking for boot in CD.. floppy... HD1
Boot Manager Drive C/Drive D C is my main one and the default
(i usually wonder off and get a drink for this)
Loads up first OS/2 splash screen
goes to text mode...
gets through 8 phases on JFS tests, two partitions E and F
(something else here.. not important)
loads NIC says cable is there..
re-boot
will do this till i get sick of it..
(it went round once when I thought it was taking a bit long and a third time by the time I knew I had a
problem).

I was on a new installation and had to install the maintenance partition before I could fix the problem.

The ONLY difference between 6 am when I shut down and the next start up at 5pm (yep the machine
ran all night) was the presence of the 1.3 million files for the CD database.

After installing D and getting into C:\config.sys did the rebooting stop. I deleted files from the
command line (gosh Ian, do you remember the Heathkit 6800 trainer??) and that still took about 25
minutes per sub-directory..... and still pushed the CPU graph flat on the roof.

Today when I did all the deletion then CPU load rose to 100% flat as and stayed there for
nearly thrirty minites AFTER all the deletes were done, there was no other activity. So why is the CPU
straining?

Now back to the + in config.sys.. put it in - reboot, take it out OK... JFS seems to be the problem when
asked to map the entire drive activity out in memory and make comparisons for consistency. I have
finished the removal of all the files except the 1.35MB monster and will reboot at the end of this
sentence.

Well, it just went through to booting everything including PM Manager.. the network is also back on line.

I can't explain it either, but with the monster file contents unfurled the machine would not boot with +E+F.
Any better ideas from this description?

Hadnt thought of that but then I dont have DOS loaded.
I use UniMaint but there are also other EA stripper programs
around, best to look on hobbes or os2site.

Transfering files via FTP also automatically strips EA's from
files.

Hello all!

A short note to say that the Melbourne Victoria (as distinct from Melbourne
Florida<g>) OS/2 SIG will be meeting next Tuesday Feb 25th in the usual
venue (map available at www./melbpc/) from 6:30pm

Topics of intense interest will include:-

News/Views: latest developments in the world of PC computing and
eCS-OS/2

DTOC: a demonstration of the current release of Desktop on Call for
OS/2, using a local server and client - right before your very eyes

OS/2 Usefuls: a collection of software, manuals etc for OS/2 which
has been donated to SIG members

Whilst I can't be there due to a double-booking, Bob and Ian will host the
evening in their inimitable style ;-) and I hope to catch up with the March
meeting

I am a MelbPC member, but OS/2 SIG meetings are not convenient for me,
so I didn't see your demo.
Nonetheless, this seems of interest, so a couple of questions :

Is this a "business" app only or is it a realistic replacement for
(domestic) Quicken ? (Yes, I know one can use a full business
system for home accounts, but .......)

Potential for use as recorder of investment transactions, and in
particular share transactions ?

Is saved data accessible ? (So that, for example, the shares
transactions data can reprocessed for other purposes)

Look forward to hearing from you, at a time which is convenient to
you.

Hi Greg and Ed

The problem is in the WPS in relation to the number of files. And
deleting them through the WPS is asking for trouble :-)

This isnt a JFS limitation as far as I'm aware.

If you use PMMail, and have over 500 emails in one folder
and try to delete all of them, you will notice the same thing,
though you want lose the WPS, you might as well go and
watch TV for 20-30 mins, or longer.

As Ed suggested, use something from the command line, its
a lot faster. I use deltree, available on hobbes and os2site
in the util's section.

I'm having problems when I use Netscape composer to create web pages
with JPG pictures.

When the web page is loaded often graphic files are only loaded up to 97
98 or 99 percent and then stop loading, although the text at the bottom
of NS451 or Mozilla says it's still loading. A reload or shift/reload
usually cures the problem.

The problem only seems to happen on my web pages and with large or small
graphic files.

I'm using IBM HTTP Server (OS/2 port of Apache) as my web server.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and knows how to fix it ?

Cheers/2

Ed.

Yes, REXX support is on here.

Please send. If this fixes the problem then we may be on something.

It is a "business" app in that it is large enough to handle a large catering
company's complete record-keeping requirements (for payroll I used to cheat
a little - data entry through spreadsheets), but is a very small program
which I also use for my personal work, so would not be out of place on the
kitchen table.

Haven't gone so far yet - Portfolio Management is a different area.
Using sub-accounts and quantity fields, (both available) and a lot of
imagination, you probably could run a simple portfolio manager, but it has
not been designed with that in mind.

>Is saved data accessible ? (So that, for example, the shares

Could be made available - not sure how to do the ODBC calls into a spread
sheet, but I can list the data in CSV format and get it into a spreadsheet
that way.

The way to do it is to use EAUTIL with the /S (strip) switch to strip off the
attributes into another file (which then can be deleted).

e.g.

EAUTIL picture1.jpg p1.eas /S

To all those at the Melbourne OS/2 Sig who saw my demonstration of the
accounting software, I am pleased to be able to let you know current
progress.

Stand alone general ledger is now working as it should. Will handle any
business whether set up as a company, trust or partnership.
Debtors and Creditors will work if you run a catering business.

Features include
native OS/2 PM program works equally well on eComStation
handles profit distributions for companies, trusts or partnerships at year
end processing and correctly allocates to the correct partner or Retained
Earnings account.
data entry handles processing for cheques, bank statement items, bank
deposits, petty cash and general journals. Petty Cash doubles as a post
anything system and is particularly useful for credit cards and the like.
Bank deposit entries also print a bank deposit slip.
Correctly accounts for GST
During data entry, general ledger accounts can be accessed by looking up
their name
Handles and reconciles multiple bank accounts (currently artificially
limited to 5), and corrects posting errors if they do not agree with the
bank statement. Reconciliation is by entering reference number and amount
off bank statement rather than trying to find an item in a list and see if
it agrees with what is on the bank statement.
Reports include full audit trails, general ledger detail reports and trial
balance for a period or range of accounts.
Quick lookup shows summary information of any account and profit by period
with comparatives.

Compared to MYOB it is amazingly fast.

Marketing information, in the form of notes and contact information attached
to customer files available, as is printing enelopes to direct mail
customers

Still to be done is
BAS reporting (need to write report format only)
Split sales invoices from the catering system to allow full debtors ledger
facilities integrated with general ledger and inventory
Split purchasing from catering system to allow full creditors ledger
integrated with general ledger and inventory
all payroll functions

Hope this will be of interest to the OS/2 eComStation Community

Hi Glen,

You may find that the net is slow during the day due to heavy lunch time
usage. Do you experience this at other times of the day?

You might like to research TCPIP update as this can cause the symptoms
you describe.

I guess you can confirm this if you boot to a command prompt and delete the possibly offending directory
structure and see if the problem dissapears.

I have a small rexx routine to delete directory structures if you want to save yourself some manual effort
(assuming you have REXX support on your system). Let me know if you want this and I'll send you it off-list.

Direct API Calls through embedded SQL

I have recently downloaded Postgres to look at the possibility of using
that. The problem will be extensions to SQL made by Sybase not echoed in
Postgres

The problem I see with DB2 (apart from the fact that I find its ISQL calls
really slow) is that the OS/2 version is no longer developed, and we would
be left in a similar
 position to the Sysbase position.

As I said in the post - stacks up really (really, really) well against
MYOB.
I can reboot the machine, start the program and be examining a general
ledger account quicker than a running MYOB can display general ledger
detail. ( I have an NT machine running MYOB right beside my OS/2 machine,
 and can actually do that.)
The Aus etc flavour is in date handling, book-keeping style. Dates are
easily switched to any style, but not sure how the yanks keep their books -
bit like HIH did I think, but it is definitely Oz today tomorrow the world.

> > I suggest a rewrite to incorporate tax codes would be useful for future

Do you REALLY beleive our benovlent dictator, Little Johnie, will make that
necessary. Come on John, have faith! Actually it's a simple screen which
will appear in the program shortly, when I get round to writing the BAS
report. As you say, I only need to tabulate
Input Tax and Output Tax for each of the various Codes that go in the BAS.

Already exists as a marketing tool

Ouch!

Been thinking about this and it is really quite simple. I have a
spreadsheet now which accurately calculates group tax for the full range of
incomes, so a screen allowing input of hours, job numbers etc
coupled with a couple of award rules should give a good payroll. I already
have the tables for reporting payroll (which I currently fill from a
 spreadsheet).

Allows you to split (save) extended attributes from a file and then rejoin the extended attributes to the file.

An extended attribute is a mechanism that allows an application to attach information to a file or directory (file
system object). Extended attributes are used to describe the object to another application, to the operating
system, or to the file system program that manages the file or directory.

EAUTIL allows you to split extended attributes from a data file or program file and place them in a hold file as
data. After you do this, you can use the file with other applications or file systems that do not recognize or
are not able to process extended attributes. By saving extended attributes to a hold file, you prevent them
from being erased or lost. The command also allows you to join extended attributes contained in the hold file to
 the data file.

 Return Codes:

       0 - Normal completion
       1 - File not found
4 - Ended due to error

Hi guys,

My download times here on chariot are in the bytes, not Kbytes !
The ping results to my isp are 110/10238/30130 with a 6% packet loss.
I'm unable to even d/l their homepage to see if there's any news.

Full story

Upgraded to driver fixpak 2 ... finally
everything's fine except net flow is very slow.

Had a problem like this a couple of years ago and some replies
suggested an mpts upgrade, ok,

Upgraded mpts to 5.40 then 5.50 ( versions as reported by warpup )
no change net still slow
computer gets slow then trap000e
long format bootdrive install backup leaving me at fp12 ddfp1 mpts 5.30
net still slow, 12 minutes & it still hasn't d/l'd the chariot homepage !
now I'm gettin' ..... a tad upset ;-)

Tell me this is happening to other people today !?!

Hi,

I am running JFS and encountered an odd operation.

with the (partial) command line set to:

IFS=.. JFS...  /CACHE:32768 ...+E+F /F:2

the machine ran normally for about two weeks then tonight without
warning the machine booted up, went through the entire check and
goto loading the NIC driver and.......

NOTHING.... black screen (no flashing cursor),
followed by the video BIOS message.....
and you guessed it... right through to loading the NIC.. ZAP back to rebooting...

Brian Butler (thanks Brian) has seen this before and suggested
taking the '+' out of the JFS driver line in CONFIG.SYS. It worked
but we are none the wiser to the cause.

Brian is using a much older version of OS/2 and this looks like a
resource or driver conflict happening.

Anyone got any ideas?

regards

Greg

Brian, Ed,

I have a theory on this....

The problem began after downloading a CD database. The file is 182MB tar.gz. Ungzip you get a
1.35GB tar file.

untarring you get about a dozen sub-directories full of files on average 1k each.. that is a LOT of files...

In OS/2 PM, accessing any of those sub-directories quickly freezes the PM (the clock stops and the
desktop is unresponsive), while the mouse is free to roam.

I think we are seeing a limitation in JFS directory structure. I did open an OS/2 window and try deleting
files at that level. The operation was very slow and quickly takes up resources (as evidenced by the
climbing CPU graph).

JFS did trap when I tried to reboot, and no other directory I have has so many files in it.

Further, after trying to display just one of these directories, it took nearly 30 minutes with 512M RAM
(133MHz) and a 900MHz processor to display the list of files. After closing the list, I tried to ask for a
delete and got a message box stating "OS/2 Workplace Error" "The task you requested was not
started. Please allow other active tasks to complete before resuming the operation". Just before
making this request, my CPU process was near 0% then jumped to 100%.

So we must ask our selves (sorry Julius) Why is it so?

If the JFS with +E+F is scanning the drive and mapping the entire drive to check the consistency, then I
am suspect that the JFS may in fact have a memory leak as the structure sizes approach limits of the
underlying programs integer/byte values.

Brian has experienced the same reboot problem, and mine only started after the tar file was unfurled
into the JFS partition, then I believe this to be a fairly clear case.

Brian, see if you can find a directory that behaves as I describe.

Well, that's my theory, any better ideas out there? Lets hear em!!! :)

Um group,

I do not know of this problem but I seriously doubt it is due to JFS
inherently, after where JFS comes from they have many huge complicated
directory structures with thousands of files just as I have at work in
Solaris Unix. The prob may be with the port but I suspect some other
culprit. The memory leak idea seems to fit the facts but who is the
culprit.

Ed,
Hi.
I have found the plus is needed on large volumes.
I encountered a situation where the boot check replayed the
log and pronounced the file system clean.
Later when accessing files deep into a subdirectory tree
I had strange errors.
I added the plus and re-booted.
This time it did a full check and found errors that it was
able to fix.
I have left the plus in ever since.
I have encountered the same situation Greg has on a
machine here but it is inconsistent. Two weeks ago
I shut down all the servers and re-booted them with no
problems.
Last week I needed to shut them down again and when re-booting
the BDC did the constant re-boot thing.
It sees to fail when starting the WPS and does not leave anything
in popuplog.os2. As Greg said it goes right back to the video BIOS
message when it re-boots.
I left it go and it repeated the cycle three times before I intervened
by booting off drive D and removing the plus.

Has anybody else seen this behaviour?

The default setting for the JFS IFS is as follows:

IFS=C:\OS2\JFS.IFS /AUTOCHECK:*

The +driveletter is really for use on the HPFS IFS to force a full
checkdisk on particular drives each
time the system is booted. JFS works differently - it always runs it's
"chkdsk" (ie it checks the
transaction logs to see if a chkdsk is needed), so the + command is
redundant.

Must be a Chariot specific problem - I'm getting 52 k/s on Internode ADSL at the
moment.

Chariot website loading fine for me....

I didn't see any performance problems today or yesterday. It could of course be a
problem at your ISP - if the ping times you give are to the ISPs Internet gateway,
then the problem is most likely at Chariot or at your local end. Try running a Trace
route (tracerte) to a website and you should be able to see at which point the delays
occur.

Well worth reading to understand some of the Gates delusions and paranoia
about OS/2.

Sad about the belated analysis that these were what drove the
anti-competitive behaviour of his company in relation to OS/2. It would
have been a darn-sight more useful about 5 years ago!

Uh, don't forget to chase down the links - the transcript indicates that he
suffers from further delusions about the work done on computers in the
early parts of *this* decade and their (pioneering?) effort to produce
quality code!

It's things like this that make you want to vote the death penalty back in.
 ;-)

Pass this on to your Linux friends so they can watch out for the same
anti-competitive tactics.

Its a combination of the + in your command line, and the PM will
possibly be unstable on a fall over or reboot, as it records what
files are being deleted, and these were not closed when the
PC fell over. If you did it several times it may have jagged it and
come up cleanly. Its more complecated than that but I'm losing
steam, this new job I have at iPrimus is taking its toll today.

I'd be blowed, now what is the best way to do this?
Open up DOS box & copy the file, which will destroy the EAs.

Ed,
