Subject: [os2genau] Differences between browsers

This ias one for Australian OS/2ers who use Telstra Cable Internet:

Try going and changing your account type via the web at:

   http://www.bigpond dot com/broadband/support/accounts

Selecting "change your account type" These are the results I found:

Netscape 4.61 aborts with a SYS3175 when trying to get to logon panel

Mozilla 1.1b gets a report from the server that it received an
unexpected message and doesn't link.

Opera/2 5.2 gets into the page but the chart of options is incorrectly
formatted and after selection of the new option and typing yes to accept
terms and conditions, pressing the "confirm" button does absolutely
nothing !

IBM Web Browser 1.2 - works perfectly - which since it's an older
version of Mozilla, seems strange. Perhaps later changes to Mozilla have
brought problems or perhaps the IBM Browser has some non-Mozilla code in
it ??

Interesting, unfortunately it means I still have to have 4 different
browsers available to be able to access all sites.

IE on Windoze works correctly on this site (that's probably the only one
they've tested it with).

Cheers/2

Ed.

Small additional piece of information - the NS 4.61 SYS3175 problem occurs after
logging in, when you are required to press the "next" button.

Doesnt work to well with Netscape under AIX, or Linux either, so its
probably an activeX cookie thingy.

But why does it work under IBM Browser 1.2 and not Mozilla 1.1b ???

Hi Ed

>But why does it work under IBM Browser 1.2 and not Mozilla 1.1b ???

There are a lot of code differences betwen IBMBrowser 1.2 and the
associated Mozilla 0.9.4, so I can only assume that IBM have taken
care of better error handling ?

Try using the goverments internet speed checking website, with
anything !

http://www.iapselfhelp dot com

Hmm, ok, I just went back and tested it, it doesnt ko IBM Web Browser
anymore, and actually gives you back results, very interesting though,
I gave it my own phone number, the phone didnt ring, and it said that
the line passed........

That is not what I consider a real test !

Interesting that it had to also give me permission and approve
my phone number before continueing.

No speed test stats or anything either, just a simple "Passed"

I could be simply testing to the nearest exchange from telstras servers
but thats not were all the phone problems mainly occur, OR, if it
cant understand a non MS browser, they may have setup a script
to make it look like it works. I know our favourite Ludite still thinks
the internet is primarily for porn and gambling, so he doesnt
want to support any spending on infrastructure.

Subject: [os2genau] vbrun300.dll & Win-os/2?

Hi guys,

I have recently been given a scanner since the owner couldn't get it to work on their
computer at all. It works for me perfectly....... under win98 :-(

It is an Avision AS6240 flatbed SCSI and there are NO drivers for OS/2 at all. Not STI,
CFM, or SANE. There are win 3.1 drivers though, but I need a win 3.1 twain enabled
program. No probs, downloaded one of those. Needs vbrun300.dll though.

What problems am I going to face once I wack the dll into Win-os2? Will this runtime
make my system virus vulnerable? Does anyone know of a win3.1 twain program that
doesn't require visual basic runtime?

Cheers
G

Hi Gavin,

Vbrun300.dll should not give you any problem at all.
I have installed in my Win-Os2 vbrun 100, 200 and 300.

Some VERY old windows 3.1 software and old windows 3.1 games use them.

Robert Traynor (BobT).

Sorry Gavin, I don't hold out much hope of this working.

You have said it runs OK under Win98, but WIN-OS2 is the 16 bit WIN3.11, so you would need
16 bit windows code and drivers.

I bought, some time ago a Windows only Plustek parrallel port scanner. It actually came with
win 3.11 and win 9x support but despite lots of attempts, it simply wouldn't work under
WIN-OS2.

It's now possible that parrallel port scanners will work to a Win9x session running in
VirtualPC/2 (SCSI ones wont), but I haven't tried it yet.

Your best bet is to try to see if anyone is willing to add support to SANE for your scanner
(it's not a rebadge of a make that is supported is it ?). Once it has support in (Linux)
Sane you will have to wait for someone to port across in a new OS/2 version (or you could do
this yourself if you have the skills/tools - how to is documented on the sane/2 site
somewhere I think).

Quite honestly, it's probably just not worth the effort. it's probably easier to go and buy
a scanner that is supported by the OS/2 version of SANE. I have a Canon FB620S that cost me
$99 new from Strathfields, including an Adaptec SCSI card (an OS/2 supported one to boot!)
and I am very happy with that.

Good luck anyway

Cheers/2

http://www.mostang dot com/sane/sane-backends.html shows an Avision AV6240 is
supported by SANE... wonder if that is the same as the AV6240....
