Hi all

the vexed question of HPFS and fragmentation!

is this a major issue (as on the MS Windows 9x set up) and if so, what utilities do
others use to defragment their partitions?

How would I know that my disc needs to be defragmented?

Never seen it as a major issue. In fact, I've only ever run a
defrag util because it was there. That said, I did notice an improvement.
I'm pretty sure there was something in Chris Graham's utils.

How would I know that my disc needs to be defragmented?

Probably if it gets slow during long write/reads.

yes, it's an issue that needs to be addressed at regular intervals;
I do mine at least every other year....

use either Graham Utilities or Gammatech Utilities;
both have a function to assess/analyze

HPFSView - View the layout of HPFS disks

 Usage: HPFSView {Switches} <Drive Spec(s)>

 Switches
 -d Defragment files.
-o<n> Optimise files with more than <n> extents.

HPFSView displays the physical layout of all
files, directories and other HPFS specific
information. After the scan of the disk has
completed it may also optionally visually
 defragment files on the disk.

The mouse can be used to select a sector: all
information about that sector will be displayed.

 Note:
Use the F1 key to speed up the disk scan.

HPFSDfrg - Defragment files on HPFS disks

 Usage: HPFSDfrg {Switches} <File Spec>
                            <Drive Spec(s)>

 Switches
 -d Display defragged files only.
-f Force file names to lower case.
 -h Hard disks only.
-r Retry count; default of 10.
-s Include Subdirectories in the search.
-o<n> Optimise files with more than <n> extents.

HPFSDfrg deframents all of the files that
match the given file specification. It can
defragment one file, one directory, one drive or
 all drives in one invocation.
 Example

it's seldom a problem for OS/2 and HPFS

and, unlike on WinDOS, you can defrag in real time and use your PC with no
coninual restarts

I don't recall right now, last time I've done a system here, after
something like 1 or 2 years, it had a ridiculosly low number of files that
needed to be defragged

Greetings all,

I've been having problems lately with my copy of Describe crashing and
Warpzilla as well. A quick troll through popuplog shows that freetype.dll is
the culprit with Describe and one of three culprits with Warpzilla (the others
being necko.dll and SW.dll).

My questions to the learned of this group are:
Has anyone encountered this (or variants) before ?
What procedures are reccommended for fixes ?

TIA

I believe that later fixpack builds of Warp4 improved the font rendering to
a point where freetype's contribution became negligible. It certainly is
the case with EcS, so you may try dumping freetype and unpacking a later
TrueType library from a later fixpack.

By design, HPFS386 and HPFS do not suffer from any level of fragmentation
that it's worth worrying about. There are OS/2 HPFS Defrag utilities but every
time I've used them, they've reported there's no point in running the utility and
when I have run it anyway I have seen absolutely no change in disk access speeds.

I guess if your hard drives run VERY full - ie 98% or so, there could be a
justification, but then I'd rather put a larger drive (or an additional drive) in
rather than run any defrag utilities.

NTFS or FAT32 under Windoze is a totally different story of course. Which
is probably why a lot of companies still ran HPFS rather than NTFS under
Windoze NT 4, even though it was no longer officially supported !

Ed.

freetype.dll is not standard in OS/2 or ODIN - so you must have installed
some add-on that uses it. de-install the add-on and see if the problem goes
away, if so contact the suppliers of the add-on for any possible fix.

I need some help!...........

We have our own Internet presence and email server (Inet.Mail - Hethmon Brothers) We
have an ADSL permanent connection via ISP Internode.

Our domain is

smart-road dot com dot au

thus I have set up email accounts for our staff for example
<gnatsmart-road dot com dot au>

today I was informed by our ISP (Internode) that they suspect our email server has
been used in the past 48 hours to send out spam mail!!!

How can I configure Inet.Mail so that hackers cant use our email server
to send out spam email?

I have attempted to do this but it is not too intuitive for me as a non
programmer!! I added the domain [smart-road dot com dot au] to the relay
control properties but this did not allow me to send out email to any
address, other than internal addresses (ie ****atsmart-road dot com dot au).

I do have a way round this at present by specifying that outgoing mail
(SMTP) is sent via our ISP mail server (mail.internode.on dot net) rather
than via our email server [nortox41.smart-road dot com dot au]

I can receive email OK!

suggestions??

That is fascinating - of all the software that we use at work Describe is the most
stable! we have a 5 user LAN set up and in more than 5 years of use. Describe
has *never* crashed or trapped or mis behaved!

hi graham,

is there any kind of firewall in your system? (i will be finally creating an OS/2 server
at home in the next week).

I have heard of some hacking by taking advantage of some weaknesses, but I suspect that
you need to tighten the firewall up.

I think brian or ed would be able to shed more light on the matter :)

HI Greg

no we have an excellent set up with firewalls etc, We have a separate stand alone
PC with 2 NIC cards whihc serves as our internet gateway machine and as well we
have Injoy Fiewall on this machine and then we have our Apache Web server and
Email server on the actual separate file and print server PC!!!

I dont think it is an issue with firewalls but rather an issue with set up of the Email
server and its relay set up!!

thanks for your support and suggestions

and it has been configures and set up well by Brian
