Subject: [os2genau] Restoring WP_Desktop in the OS2INI File

Hello everyone.

This message is for the benefit of all list readers around the world
but came out of a question at the Melbourne OS/2 SIG July meeting
regarding recovery of a corrupted desktop.

Down below is a three line REXX routine to restore the WP_DESKTOP
attribute in the OS/2 INI file.

This little beauty will often fix stupid symptoms of corruptions
which are otherwise inexplicable and seemingly unrelated - things
like the WPS locking up and then restarting, losing icons from your
Desktop, the dreaded "Creating Temporary Desktop" message, losing all
the Startup Folder icons and so on.

/* Reapply objectid WP_DESKTOP to C:\DESKTOP (if your boot drive is
not C then change the first argument to SYSSETOBJECTDATA) */
CALL RXFUNCADD "SYSSETOBJECTDATA","REXXUTIL","SYSSETOBJECTDATA"
CALL SYSSETOBJECTDATA "C:\DESKTOP","OBJECTID=<WP_DESKTOP>"

This should be used in conjunction with the CONFIG.SYS setting for
the same thing: SET Desktop=C:\Desktop

I suggest that you create a little CMD and put it somewhere handy
where you can reach it via the OS/2 System object and the Drives
object. As I just proved, the time you will need it is when you can't
get to WarpCenter or Launchpad, and your Desktop icons have already
gone into the bit bucket.

If you get a Desktop lockup, lose the WPS and your icons, etc then
a) shut down all programs MANUALLY (Peer network appears not
affected)
b) close all windows and folders
c) assign someone to sit in the next room and panic on your behalf
(you cannot afford to panic)
d) run the above ResetDesktop.CMD
e) do a normal shutdown and reboot
f) cleanup any residual glitches
g) declare panic mode OFF and
h) resume normal work.

Best regards

Women need time & money
1)
women = time * money

2)
time = money

Sub 2) -> 1)
3)
women = money^2

Money is the root of evil

4)
money = evil^(1/2)

Sub 4) -> 3)
5)
women = (evil^(1/2))^2

simplified:
6)
women = evil

QED
Perhaps some-one could write something in REXX or C++?

Sounds a bit like:

Any good manager will tell you:
intelligence gets you power
.... and time is money

i.e.
power = intelligence
and
time = money

and we all know that:
work = power  x time

so:
work = intelligence x money
or
money = work / intelligence

i.e.
It doesn't matter how much work I do,
as long as I have next to no intelligence
I will always make lots of money.

There was / is a patch to work with VIA chips, I'm pretty sure it's
on HOBBES. just search on USB.

There were also articles on Voice or OS2Zine also covering this.

Got this reply from my girlfriend:

men need women & time & money
1)
men = women * time * money

2)
women = evil

3)
money = evil^(1/2)

4)
time = money

Sub 3) -> 2)
5)
time = evil^(1/2)

Sub 2),3),5) -> 1)
6)
men = evil * evil^(1/2) * evil^(1/2)

simplify:
7)
men = evil^(3/2)

ie men are even more evil than women
