Don't forget to look at the documentation for your router. For some, the
gateway address is at 10.0.0.1. For others, it is 192.168.0.1. The one
I'm using now (a Billion router) has its address set at 192.168.1.254.
The rules do change from one manufacturer to another, so it's important
to check what addresses your router is using.

If your router is genuinely at address 192.168.1.1, then 192.168.1.40 is
certainly a plausible address for the printer. As a general rule, if the
router has address 192.168.A.B, then addresses of the form 192.168.A.x
will be part of your LAN.

A lot of confusion can be resolved by using the "ping" command.
[C:\TCPIP\java]ping 192.168.0.1
PING 192.168.0.1: 56 data bytes

----192.168.0.1 PING Statistics----
8 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% pack

[C:\TCPIP\java]ping 192.168.1.254
PING 192.168.1.254: 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_seq=0. time=0. ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_seq=1. time=0. ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.254: icmp_seq=2. time=0. ms

This tells me that address 192.168.1.254 is responding, therefore it
must be an address on our LAN.
