It was great to see in the latest Netlabs newsletter reference to a new
project eCUPS

http://svn dot netlabs dot org/ecups

Whose aim is to bring the Common Unix Printer Support (CUPS) to OS/2 and
eComStation !

Hoping that the CUPS configuration files that work under Unix or Linux
will work under the final OS2/eCS version, means that one MAJOR problem
for eComStation (finding printers that are able to be attached to OS/2
or eComStation systems) may be addressed. Not all printers have CUPS
drivers but an aweful lot more have CUPS drivers than have OS/2 drivers !

Great News !!

Cheers/2

Ed.

I'm currently working on bring CUPS to OS/2 and eCS.

Bart has written a port driver that will help integrate CUPS into eCS.

Currently working:
- printing of .txt, image files, and postscript files to a HP Laserjet
printer with postscript, and connected via LAN (lpd server in the laserjet).

- currently working on getting the other types of printers supported by
CUPS working, starting with my HP laserjet in laserjet mode, and
connected by lpd.

- next will come getting USB printers to work (which is the more
interesting part given that we already have good PS and laserjet support).

Cheers,

Paul.

Indeed Ed.

I was also impressed by the description of the build process (described WRT
Postscript drivers). It didn't look too hard to translate to other printer
types.

The big question is - are "win-printers" supported by CUPS, not just
postscript and PCL printers (we have drivers for those already).

Dunno about true 'winprinters' but check out www.linuxprinting dot org

cups + gutenprint = vast majority of printers supported...

Cheers,

Paul.

Hope so.

Although I wonder now what could have happened to the win32 printer project.

Quite a fascinating site.

Plenty of database entries to browse.

The Kyocera FS-820 is listed as a 'mostly works' model. Could be too new to
have been tested or used in the field that much.

Nice to know that we're ahead of the Linux game this time <g>
