Subject: Re: Warp FP15 woes

( apologies for the late input ).

Glenn-via-John, if you haven't resolved this yet,
try this refinement of Ed's suggestions

* background:
  - vw32.sys is IBM's eMulatedDOS/WinOS2 driver for W32s
  - some verions won't load properly ( or something like that )

SO:

* follow Ed's suggestions to boot to an OS/2 command prompt
  ( ALT-F1, select Command Prompt option ).

* COPY config.sys to something that means something to you
  ( eg config.nfg )

* type TEDIT CONFIG.SYS
  ( should start a TEDIT session on config.sys )

* press ESCape to move the cursor into the text area
( from the 'command' line at the bottom of the screen )

* scroll through the text to find
  DEVICE=VW32.SYS ( or something like that )

* REMark it ( make it a comment )

* press F2 to save changes
F3 to exit back to OS/2 prompt.

* type EXIT for a reboot.

* IF you can't get to a command prompt from your boot from hard disk,
boot from the OS/2 install floppies and select F3
  to exit to command prompt
at one of the early screens in the install process

That command prompt will be at A:,
but you should be able to TEDIT C:CONFIG.SYS
  OR C:\OS2\TEDIT\CONFIG.SYS

Good luck.

Regards
Chris.

OK, first thing to try ....

restart and when the [] OS/2 appears, press Alt+F1 and select one of the
archives - presuming you have archiving turned on. There should be 3
choices, I tend to go for the middle one, number 2.

If this doesn't work or if you haven't any archives, go bck into ALT+F1
again and this time select to go to the command line (F2 option I
think). See if the system boots to a command prompt. If it does run
chkdsk /F on all drices apart from the one you have booted onto
(normally C:). Then run Chkdsk C: and see if any errors are displayed.
If there are errors displayed, then you will need to restart the system
either from an OS/2 boot diskette or from your Warp 4 install CD - Press
F3 when given the option. Run chkdsk C: /f from here and hope chkdsk
can fix the errors.

If none of this helps, Its time to wipe the partition and re-install !!

You may wish to consider this as a chance to update to the current
level, by going to mensys.nl and ordering an OS/2 Warp 4 to eComstation
version 1.2 CD and booklet (or digital delivery if you want to burn the
install CDs yourself).

Cheers/2

Subject: Problems again with Firefox

I had this problem soon after I switch to Firefox & Thunderbird from IBM
Web Browser - now it's back again.

If I start Firefox from its icon, it fails with an error in XPCOM.DLL -
however if I access firefox from a link in an email in Thunderbird, the
browser starts up withou any problems.

The icon starts Firefox from it's own directory and there is no
reference to IBMWB, Mozilla, Firefox or Thunderbird directories in
either the path or libpath statements in config.sys.

As I think both thunderbird and firefox see able to run with the
XPCOM.DLL loaded by Thunderbird, should I simply overwrite firefoxs
XPCOM.DLL with the one from thunderbird ??

Some more information. If I start Firefox from it's icon and thunderbird
is NOT running it starts OK, only if I have started thunderbird file
(and presumably it's version of xpcom.dll is in memory) do I get the
problem.

I've seen this before, however as I recall, I had to start Firefox
first, and if Firefox was running, then Thunderbird would start. If
Thunderbird was started first, Firefox wouldn't start.

I'm not sure if copying Thunderbird's xpcom would work - my solution is
to use Rich Walsh's run utility.

I have run! copied into the FF directory as firefox!.exe and use this to
launch firefox.

I have run! copied into the Tbird directory as thunderbird!l.exe and use
this to launch Thunderbird.

These set the necessary libstrict etc statements to allow different
versions of thunderbird & firefox to coexist nicely.

Cheers,

Paul.

 Hi,

Yes you have mentioned the Run! utility before however what I can't
understand is that a week ago I could start these programs in either
order without problems. What I have done in the meantime is to
re-install Innotek Java 1.42 and link it into the Firefox Browser.

By the way using either the firefox version of xcom.dll with
thunderbird and the reverse made no difference at all !

Cheers/2

I don't (any more) but until Firefox and Thunderbird progressed to a
reliable version, I needed IBMs OS2WEB for browsing and e-mail (and a
good job it did too !)

If I can "re-fix" this XPCOM problem - then I'll probably totally remove
Mozilla and IBM WB.

Hi Ed, Dennis,

Not using either Firefox or Thunderbird, does either of these include
the functions of the IBM WB/WarpMozilla "Composer" component - i.e
in-situ GUI editing of webpages/tags/anchors etc?
In my case I frequently edit out unwanted sections of saved webpages,
and occasionally need it to save the contents of some shtml pages that
don't allow "saving" as webpage.

What you appear to be after is the NVU module http://www.nvu dot com/
and http://www.os2site dot com/sw/internet/editors/nvu-0.80-os2.zip
which may look as if it is an overkill but then I don't know what else you do
to web sites ...<g>

But according to Wikipedia (who trusts wikipedia? <g>)
http://en.wikipedia dot org/wiki/NVu, it is based on the Composer from the Moz
suite.

Hi Ed,

Correct guess this time. A Pioneer DVD recorder with a 80G HDD. Hell, I
only have a 10G HDD in the PC I'm now using - and that's only half full.

The recorder is great for editing out all the rubbish. It will do down
to the frame - and for removing all the ads. Makes watching an F1 GP
worth it.
