Kris,

That's a lot of bullshit! Every installation I ever did was a fresh
installation to a blank partition, whether OS/2 V2.10, V3.0 or V4.0 -->
MCPx/eCS! It also came automatically installed with V1.2/1.3! "Attrib"
is a family application - both OS/2 and DOS, and is installed
irrespective of whether you have DOS support or not!

Hi Kris,

I apologise - yes it is a selectable option - I just have automatically
selected it forever, along with every other one of the file utilities -
I just couldn't conceive that anyone wouldn't have selected them - but I
guess if people don't check-out what comes up when you press the "more"
button, they wouldn't know!

Hate to say it but Kris is right here, the first warp 4 CD's you had to tick
the additional utilities or something box otherwise attrib wasnt installed.

Hi All.

Thought I'd try some experimenting....

I have burnt 3 x mpg episodes to CD. Our DVD player doesn't see them, but
I think Kenny's does.

I've seen DVD Recorder (the whitegoods type) drop from $900.00 to $288,
but we still can't afford that.

We are still a CD only (and LP for that matter) family, except for a
Viewmaster DVD player. It doesn't like anything I've burnt to CD's.

However what I did do today was this: 1) copy 3 x f*rtur*ma episodes into
d:\temp 2) renamed the 3 episodes to 8x3 terminology. Disk space used =
680MB 3) went to d:\utils\misofs and invoked <d:\mkisofs\mkisofs -o
d:\tmp\future_1.iso d:\temp\. > I made the ISO File of 680MB 4) Inserted a
blank CD, fired up the Recorder Window of RSJ, and dragged the
Future_1.ISO image in....it was written in a LONG time, but the CD was
cool on exit.

On Warpvision, the 3 MPG's still come up, and all are played. On Windows
media Player...same thing. Our hopeless DVD player (a ViewMaster) sees
nothing. Kenny's DVD Player (a Phillips) sees the raw MPG's (on another
disk), but prefers this one. All 3 episodes play! The local whitegoods
store wouldn't let me try their new machines. Pity. I *may* have bought
one. :-)

So, I wonder if I have really written a VCD? What started me on this
"trip" was the local Tandy salesman said "If you use Nero........" I
reasoned (probably inaccurately) that a VCD was MPG's or AVI's held
together in an ISO format. True or false? <GG>.

OK, given that my Viewmaster is probably a bit dated, and the kids stay
too long in front of the computer anyway, does anyone have a video player
(about $50-$100's worth) that can "play VCD's", and will actually play raw
MPG's (like the Phillips), or has done something similar (and obviously
*much* better) to what I have done, and got a result, without all the
dithering of the M$ burners?

Regards

NICK

Hi Ian,

Presume that you saw my apology/correction, when I thought about it
again - still applied to MCP1 and MCP2 and eCS 1.0 and 1.1 IIRC, can't
remember now whether eCS 1.2 also, but as I had been automatically
enabling virtually everything since V2.10, it was second-nature to do so
-- heck with the RO attributes being carried forward to the HDD with eCS
1.1 for the dll controlling the desktop theme icons it was essential to
have attrib available if you wanted any changes activated. I guess the
only reason for it [along with the other utilities - utility disk
creation and REXX included] not being automatically enabled was intended
for the corporate area where SysAdmins wouldn't want "sometime OS/2
users" being in a position where they could really screw-up their
systems, and thus need a lot of additional support!

now a days (and OS/2 compatible).

He's talking about a standalone DVD Video recorder here - if you can get
one of those for below $100 I'd love to know where :P

Just copying some MPG files to a CD doesn't make it a VCD...

You need to use something like
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/video/vcdimager-0_7_12-os2-bin.zip
to write the MPG files to CD in a format like a VCD uses.

Paul.

Hi,
If the files now on the CD are still *.mpg then you simply have created a DATA
CD that contains mpg files. Some home DVD players will play them, some won't.

VCD's and DVD's are created from mpg files but are converted to a different
FileName.extension for each. VCD's are mpeg1 files and are *.DAT and placed
on CD's, while DVD's are *.VOB created on DVD's.
BTW, VOB files created on a CD is yet another variation and in NERO speak is
called a "Mini DVD", only some DVD home players will play these ones, too.

Perhaps someone else could tell you how to convert to these formats under
os/2. I would be interested myself as I have only done it under WinXP.

Regards,
Robert Traynor (BobT).

John,
I have not used the d-link card but had an IBM card in my TP390E.

The autodetect did not work and the
connection paramaters had to be entered into protocol.ini

As the syntax for this is different from one nic to the next I can
not quote you the exact entries to make.
They will be at the end of protocol.ini and will specify
data rate,10 or 100 and the duplex, full or half.

The card documentation should include the info
regarding these paramaters

Hi all.

For some time I have known that my previously working Xircom Ethernet
PCMCIA
card (with BNC connector for coax cable) has
not been working. After a slow process of testing including replacing the
dongle, I have accepted that it's probably the card that
has been damaged (after checking in Win98 which told me "there is something
wrong with your Xircom card. Please check your
network devices and start again")

Today I bought a D-Link 650 card after checking NicPak and other sources to
ensure I got a card which
a) had a BNC connector for my coax network cables
b) had OS/2 support

Now I have to get used to a new set of card characteristics including that
it
defaults to an address and interrupt setting on boot.

The os2warp.be site is still rebuilding their Notebook/2 section so I can't
see what others have said about setting up the card.

Does anyone have experience with the card on a Thinkpad, and can anyone
please tell me what I need to do to make
connections?

PC-Card Director sees the card, recognises the manufacturer but does not
have
any resources assigned to it.

What more would people like to know about the machine etc?

Best regards

This is what I'd do next too. Someone later suggested that you might
have to tick a particular box to have it installed. I don't know
because I always install all the extras anyway.

Thanks all,
don't know why it wasn't installed, but now it is and it's working.

When a file is saved the system sets the archive attribute, so when I
generate html files from their configuration files I will clear the
archive attribute. And of course only use those configuration files with
the archive attribute set.
Works ok when there is one configuration file per html file, but where
you have many html files generated by the one configuration file then
other means must be found.

I'm considering using CRC testing to see what needs to be updated.
Just in case anyone has a suggestion, what I'm doing is a web gallery
All the photos are jpg's and in their own directory.
For simplicity each photo page will have a single photo and standard
navigation controls.
I have one file which contain all the captions for the photos and
another file which defines the grouping of the photos.
When I add photos or change anything all the pages are recreated even if
only a caption has been altered.
Recreating every page is not an issue, but it's a bit tiresome having to
upload all those files which are the same as those already on the site.
Maybe the easiest way is to generate them to a temp directory and then
do a CRC or line by line compare between the new file and the old and
replace those files which aren't the same.

Anyway thanks for the help, when it wasn't there I was concerned that it
might have been a LVM issue.

Regards
Dennis

Hi Both,

Go to \IBMCOM\MACS and open up the appropraite NIF file for your card -
this is a text file and documents the available options (this is what
MPTS uses to check you are entering the correct data).

Whoops - SORRY - I thought we were talking computers. A$288,- sounds
about right for a Hi-Fi DVD recorder, actually it sounds like a pretty
good price, not much more expensive that a VCR !

Indeed.

But you'll have to agree it's inhuman to have to run the whole eCS
install again just to retrieve ONE single file. And in my opinion it is
stupid too. The file should be included in the files of the minimum
install already. Elementery.

That's why I'd sent the file immediately to Dennis. I don't know what I
am talking about according to the enlighted, but still that was the
right thing to do.

I strongly recommend you to alter politics. Use jalbum, and it will do
ALL the tedious and laborious work in your place.

jAlbum is a java app working perfectly (and quick) with java131 as well
as GC java141 (and for sure with innotek java too)

http://jalbum dot net/

Have a look here:

http://www.kolibrieweg dot net/

and click onto the tomcat.

Everything is done not by me but automagically by jAlbum.

I suspect Dennis got the file from several people as I sent it also !

(under OS/2 Warp4 - don't know about eCS but it "ought" to be the same)
one option, would be to run selective install (type INSTALL at the
command line or select the object through the WPS), select System
Utilities in the setup and installation screen and then press next and
insert the install media when requested.

By the way on my (US version) of Merlin CP2, the two items NOT selected
are "Link Object modules" and "installation utilities" - on this
version, at least, "change file attributes" is selected by default. This
may only be the case on the US, CP2 version though.
