Well there's a "concise" quote 2 - 12 weeks ?? It means they don't know
!! So TPG sold you the equipment BEFORE checking service availability -
that's not very professional of them !

I'm not sure where you're located in this broad land but if your in
Sydney or Melbourne, Wireless is now becoming another, cost effective
option and is not limited by Telstra's exchange capacity.

Ed

I can vouch for that. I am in Sydney and using unwired. My exchange is
ADSL enabled but and its a big but, I can't get ADSL because I am
connected to a RIM, which is not ADSL enabled. Once VOIP is sorted out
then I might get rid of my landline totally.

Ken

 Hi Ed,

I have the network card installed and configured as you advised.

On booting the boot screen says:

"Network speed is 100 Mbps / Full_Duplex Mode"
SURECOM EP-320X-R-100/10M PCI Adapter NDIS2 driver is installed"

Then the line:

"DHCP client did not get parameters. DHCPSTART: Continuing to try in background."

Can I do anything else to test setup seeing that TPG haven't activated the broadband connection?
Is it possible to use the router to connect to my present Internet provider?
Do I have to enter parameters to do this?

Regards,

Alan Duval

What you have so far is GOOD !!

the PC appears to becorrectly configured - it's searching out on the
ethernet cable for a DHCP server - a role that your ADSL modem / Router
should be playing. It's very possible that it WON'T do this until it has
a connection, so if you are plugged into the ADSL box and it's turned
on, what you have done is all you can do until the connection is there.

Just an addendum to Ed's post. DHCP should be enabled when you have
your connection with TPG established. However you will probably need to
disable DHCP to setup the router first, otherwise there will be no
connection to the router's ip address. Once you've done this and setup
the router with everything you need (including telling it to be a DHCP
server) then go back to TCPIP config and re-enable DHCP. If the router
isn't set to be a DHCP server then you will always get that message
"DHCP client did not get parameters. DHCPSTART: Continuing to try in
background", and you will not have access to ethernet Internet functions
(including the routers setup IP as mentioned above). Apart from that,
you're all set :-)

Cheers

Hi All

I've just come across a java program jedit and am unable to get it to

Previously I've run java programs using a command like "java -jar
jedit42install.jar"

This brings up an error dialog.

Anyone got any advice

When broadband will be available, it will be shown somewhere in the
setup pages ("Status" perhaps) of the router. You don't have to worry
about that. Just see the PC and router are properly connected. And I
would advise you to browse a bit in the manual of the router

Indeed.

No! Please, the DHCP server is has to look for is the router!

When router and PC properly are connected, the the DHCP server at the PC
should find the DHCP server at the router and, by in a browser typing in
the router's IP address, Alan should land in the router's web page. At
this stage there is no need for a broadband connection at all.

Bottom line: what Alan must do NOW is to connect router and PC properly.
Probable it's just a matter of powering on the router. And attaching
both devices by cable of course.

Good heavens!!!! No, not at all.

Please guys!!!

I have told it already earlier: when you have to deal with a newbee,
keep it simple and clear:

stage one is:

- DHCP at the PC
- which should enable connection to the router.

Nothing less, nothing more.

Seems my problem is trying to use 1.18 instead of 1.3 or later.

Now I have 1.42, so what would happen if I got rid of all the 1.18
references in my config sys.

Or can 1.42 completely replace 1.18

Regards

Dennis.

Yea, I have but you won't like it. I hate java. The sooner it dies the

Hi Alan

I've been away for a couple of days, so I'm just catching up with what's
happened.

On page 9 of the booklet that came with my Billion it's headed
"Configuring Your ADSL Firewall Router". Find that page and do the
things it says. This part of the setup is OS independent, so it'll be
same for you as a Windoze user. Like Ed said, below, DHCP may not work
until you have ADSL connected, but I think the router will still issue
you with an IP. At least this way you can prove your router and
ethernet connection. You should be able to get to the IP specified and
fiddle around inside the router setup. I would suggest that you not
change any settings that you don't know about - there were plenty in
that category for me. If it does all go wrong, check the book, coz
there is a reset switch on the router.

Bear in mind that you can connect another 3 computers to this router and
they too will have ADSL connection.

Are we having fun yet?

Yes, I believe this is correct. After I finish this I'll disconnect my

All correct.

However, there will be a further step when TPG email you to let you know
that your ADSL is connected. Tey'll give you your username/password,
both of which will have to entered into the relevant spaces in the
router setup so that the router can connect to TPG. Use the wizard
setup and it's self explanitary.

But Kris is right, that you should be able to talk to your router
without any ADSL connected.

We must be having by now??

Kev

Almost correct. I assume TPG will be the same there as here in Perth.
They'll issue you a password, which you'll be instructed to change.
Also, the username will look a little different from your expectation.

Apart from the above, this will be all you'll have left to do on that day.

Hi Dennis.

I have been working with Steve Levine to get a Java app going - to connect a
Palm to Sundial Relish.

During the long time of trying, I cleaned up my Java:
a) Java11 just wasn't doing anything
b) Java118 was almost entirely superceded by 13 or 131
c) Java142 has some things that 131 doesn't and *vice versa*

Therefore I am of the opinion that you only need ONE EACH of Java 131 and
Java142. I had multiples because of repeated installs.

The latest versions are available to registered users from the eCS USA
download site, plus the Innotek site for Java142.

One caution I would offer to all re 131: if you have an application that
needs serial communications take care to get BOT the javacomms13 and the
javacomms131 zip files and keep them both available. The app will specify
whether it is version specific, and which version to use.

Bear in mind the basics of education are to keep it simple and
absolutely for 100 % right if you are dealing with beginners. And in the
end, the same applies when you are dealing with knowledgeables.

So we better let start him with just one computer. And can I urge you
