Hi Ian,

Well -- I guess one out of two isn't bad -- for M$!
Seriously , for a service that's trying to beat Google, what a pathetic

You'll also note that the search engine referenced is "beta.search" or
something, so like most of M$ software, it isn't finished "quite yet".

Might be worth dropping a line to the organisation listed as being at
os2site dot com to tell them about this M$ blunder ??

Cheers/2

Mike - go do the search - MSN links os2site to a "certain" australian
goverment organisation .... I think that's the point Ian is making
(but we should keep it secret - pun intended).

Hi Ed,

That was the first thing I did - and of course the ASIO link also went
straight to Ian's site!
Which was what I meant about one out of two correct!

And my comment was that perhaps ASIO need to be told that MSN is picking
up their site data and listing it under incorrect links. They might not
be too happy.

Hi Ed,

Well if someone puts them wise, then there'll be at least one Govt.
entity that knows that OS/2 is still alive and kicking!

Oh, come on, Ed.

Linking ASIO to OS2 Warp guarantees at least
one intelligent association with our 'Intelligence'
organisation.
( some, of course, might regard the correct association
  as "Warped"
  - just how many puns are we running here? )

Chris.

From: Chris_neeson <Chris_Neeson at compuserve dot com>
Subject: Re: backup to CD & EAs - Standards

I'd asked whether CD burner programs wrote EAs with files to CD,
got some responses from Mike, Voytek & maybe others whose names
I've missed, and thought I'd check the standards.

I'll describe what's in the standards in a minute,
but the next step seems to be to ask Chris Wohglemuth re CDREcord/2
& check IBM's Device Developer Kit as to exactly what CDFS supports.

Anyway, for EAs on CD, the relevant standards seem to be:

* ISO 9660 Rev 2 ( ECMA 119 )
  - Volume & File Structure for CDROM, 1987

* ISO 13346 ( ECMA 167 )
  - Vol & File Structure for Write Once & Rewritables,
    nonsequential recording, 1997

* ISO 13490 ( ECMA 168 )
  - Vol & File Structure for Read Only, Write Once, 1994.

It turns out that the earlier 9660 standard allowd for Unix style EAs
FOR FILES ( as Mike mentioned ), with these being written as the
first extent in the space allocated for that file on the CD.

The File Structure in the later standards allow much greater use of EAs.

They allow

* a lot more variety in TYPEs of EA that can be associated WITH
  A FILE.

IMPORTANTLY, FILE EAs are written IN THE DIRECTORY for these file
systems ( ie 'shifted' to the directory from the file extents ).

There's an EA type for "Application Use", one to duplicate
the Unix style EA information contained in ISO 9660, and even
one to allow the entire contents of small files to be stored
as EAs in the directory immediately after the filename
  structure, etc etc

* EAs for just about any file system entity

So we can have EAS for

  - the Volume Description itself

  - Paths ( which I don't fully understand yet )

  - Directories

  - as well as individual files.

This is where I'd gotten confused
  - I'd seen the EA structure for the Volume Description in source
code and thought it was a structure for all EAs for all files
on the CD ( whereas it's specifically for the Vol Desc in the std ).

Anyway, the next step as far as EAs goes is to see what CDRecord
does, and what IBM builds into its CDFS.

Regards
Chris.
