Subject: Win98 fat32 trouble

Hi Guys,

I'm sure this has been put on the list before, but I'm having trouble with fat32 and OS/2
pf15. I need one 40gig partitions for win98, which will need to be fat32 (fat16 won't
format) as drive C:, the I need about 1meg OS/2 HPFS drive D: then 20 or so gig HPFS
drive E: for data. Win98 needs to be put on first or it complains I have OS/2 or Boot
Manager and repartitions the whole disk to one big partition.

The problem is I get os/2 can't use your HD error. I have fat32.ifs and daniDASD
driver. How can I get around this problem and win98 re-partitioning my drive?

Hi Gavin.

First, Fat16 is limited to a maximum of 2gb partition size.
End of story.

Second, the Fat32.ifs driver under os2 has a limitation of
a maximum 32gb. You must NOT exceed 32gb ever.!
The very latest version of os2fat32 has still not overcome
the 32gb issue. From memory, the 32gb issue is buried
at the bottom of the documentation somewhere.

Third, there are ways to hide os/2 from Win98 install,
but the easiest is to put it on first. As you have
found out.

Fourth, Create your partitions in advance of the win98
installation. You can use os2 fdisk (boot from floppy or cd)
or use Partition Magic. Then install win98 and format
only the win98 partition as fat32.

Regards,
Robert Traynor (BobT).

Hi John,

Humble apologies again. Could you please forward this to the os/2 list as I
am having no end of troubles with my email setup, and I am not subscribed to

Hi Robert,

Yeah I new about that 2gig limit for fat16. I had the problem of Win98 not formatting the
partition as fat32. It would if I chose to delete everything else :-(

Anyway I now have two 1gig C: partitions for OS's only. One for Win98 and the other for
OS/2. Obviously these are hidden from each other. I have a 30gig fat32 D: partition
and the rest HPFS E: partition. OS/2 sees both now. I don't have Partition Magic so it
was all FDISK (warp) and FDISK (win). Alot of work, but got there in the end.

Thanks for your help

The trick is to have your OS/2 utility boot diskettes at the ready. Create your partitions if
you haven't already done so. Install boot manager and create the Win98 partition as the first
startable partition, followed by your OS/2 boot partition. if you want total separation, make
both of these primary partitions (they'll both become the C: drive alternatively depending
upon which system is selected in boot manager), or make the OS/2 partition a logical drive in
the extended partition if you want to be able to see the WIN98 partition from the OS/2
partition (you'll need to install Henk's FAT32 driver under OS/2 for this to work of course).
This would make the Win98 boot partition C: and the OS/2 one D:.

I am assuming you are NOT running a LVM version of OS/2 or eCS - if so the instructions are
similar but not identical to those above.

Install Win98 FROM A Propper M$ CD (not a System recovery CD !! - these wipe all partitions
before they start), select the first partition and let it disable boot manager. Go through
the complete WIN98 install and check all is working, then boot from your OS/2 utility
diskettes, run FDISK and remove and re-add boot manager and then remove (if needed) and
re-add the two boot partitions to the boot manager. Exit (save) from FDISK remove diskettes
and shutdown system.

If you haven't already done so, install OS/2 now to the second partition.

Once this is complete, reboot and select OS/2 or Win98 at start up and both should work.

Cheers/2

Ed.

Hi Ed,

I could not get Win98 to install when using fat32. It found BM and told me "A
non-MSDOS partitions is taking up your entire hard drive" My choices were to delete it
or exit setup. The only way I could get Win98 to accept the partition was to format it as
FAT before installing, so the win98 partition is still FAT16. That's OK though. I prefer
my OS's to be away from data. Another interesting thing was that if I removed BM, but
kept that space unused, Win98 wanted to install in that tiny space instead of the Active
C: partition I set for it. It seems to think that anything over 2gig is NTFS and anything
below is FAT. Wierd.

I'm happy now though. I can see and burn my music creation files from OS/2 now
(these thing have REAL long file names :-) ) This is why I decided to go with FAT32 in
the first place. I found vfat very problematic with PM tasks and formatting floppies it
seemed to interfere.

Give it a couple of day's and we might even make the required minimum of 5 people !

Do you know whether the Sydney OS/2 UG still meets by the way ? I haven't heard anything from
them for a long time. If I understand this correctly, a "meetup" is not intended to be
anything like a UG, simply a good excuse to get together and have a "natter" and perhaps a
couple of beers.

I've been presuming that you're using Win98 SE2, not the original Win98 ?? I'm pretty sure
the original Win98 had problems with partitions over 8GB.

Glad to hear you've got it working.
