Hi Gavin,
Addendum to that. I just tried out the same test on another FP12 on a
machine with 8MB of on-board-SiS [shared] AGP memory and the result was
again 60% canvas, but no black at all on the canvas, so FP12/15 etc., on
it's own isn't causing the problem.

Subject: A batch of seriously bad components is disabling computers around the world

As discussed at the MelbPc Os2 SIG last night.
Credit to os2hardware email list.

See Toronto Star website for full story...

-----------------partial quote----------------------------

Smaller than a triple-A battery, these tiny electronic components aren't
likely to cause serious injury to computer users.
But a faulty capacitor can render a computer useless without warning.

And they are - by the thousands, if not millions.
Capacitors in all kinds of electronic circuits seem to be missing some
critical ingredients that keep them from exploding. It's unclear how
this bad batch of capacitors came to be. Some say it's a case of
bungled corporate espionage.

Industry analysts say that something like this was bound to happen in
such a highly competitive market.

Subject: Problem demo-ing eCS MT with network Internet access.

Hi All,

At my the Os2 SIG group (Melbourne PC Users Group - os/2 SIG) last
night I tried to demo the eCS 1.1 Maintenance Tool.

The SIG has purchased our own copy of eCS 1.1 for our own club
machine.

I could not demonstrate the eCS MT as the "powers that be" have our machine
behind a firewall and with an internet lan connection that explicitly
demands a proxy for all HTTP and FTP connections.

Our browsers will only work if we add to their configuration for
manual proxy, specifically:- proxy1.melbpc dot org dot au Port 8080.

What I need to know is, HOW do I tell the eCS MT to use the proxy.?

At the moment, the eCS MT 2.0 recognizes the ecomstation web site,
attempts to download a file and effectively hangs.

If I use a browser with the proxy added, I can go to the ecomstation
site and download anything almost instantly, the other side of the
firewall is directly connected to a internet backbone.

And in case someone asks, I did configure the eCS MT with my download
ecs"name" and ecomstation download password, which I got by attempting
a download from the "Download Software" section, AFTER logging into
the ecomstation dot com site.

And PLEASE don't suggest I contact the "Internet Team" or administrators
of my clubs' Internet setup. They are a pack of windows users with linux
pretensions and are as useless as tits on a bull. Besides, if they did
do any changes, eCS 3.0 will have been delivered by the time they get
around to reviewing any "required" changes.

TIA,
Robert Traynor (BobT).

I have a nVidia TNT2 M64 AGP /w 32Mb ram. My SDD is 7.07 IBM version. Interesting
that this problem didn't appear on your 8Mb SiS system. I wonder if it has something to
do with my AGP bios settings. Will try on my sister's computer with has a 3D fx Voodoo
3000 /w 16Mb ram and see what happens.

Subject: How to use more than one Mozilla on the same eCS/os2 system

Hi All,

Following the MelbPc Os/2 SIG meeting last night where John
demoed the Mozilla FireBird 0.6 for os/2, the following info
is to enable anyone to be able to use more than one Mozilla
on the same eCS/os2 system at the same time.!

The info is From:-
http://www.os2bbs dot com/OS2News/Warpzilla.html

You can run multiple versions of Mozilla/Phoenix at the same time, as
long as you are careful. You must use different profiles for each version,
and run a little script to start it:

Create a batch file "gofirebird.cmd" and locate it in the same
sub directory as MozillaFireBird.
Note:- This is from MY installation, change drive letters and
directories to suit YOUR system..

-----------------start gofirebird.cmd---------------------------
 at echo off

SET MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
SET LIBPATHSTRICT=T
SET HOME=D:\home\FireBird
SET MOZILLA_HOME=D:\home\FireBird

SET BEGINLIBPATH=D:\Programs\Firebird;%beginlibpath%'
SET PATH=D:\Programs\Firebird;%PATH%

rem D:\Programs\Firebird\MozillaFirebird.exe
MozillaFirebird.exe

-------------------end gofirebird.cmd-------------------------
Create icon on desktop and set the properties to "Start Minimized".

Add the line below to your FIREBIRD "PREFS.JS" file (beware word wrapping).
Also Note the use of TWO backslash characters is required.

user_pref("browser.bookmarks.file", "D:\\home\\default\\Mozilla\\Profiles\\OptusNet Internet\\8g92ofmf.slt\\bookmarks.html");

The above enables me to use the SAME bookmark file for the IBM Web
Browser, in Mozilla FireBird as well.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, please post your ideas
under the SUBJECT heading above.

More Suggestions people.?

Regards,
BobT.

Subject: PC Update SIG Report for OS/2 May meeting

Melbourne PC SIG Meeting Report
To: G Taig Features Editor PC Update
CC: OS/2 SIG Members
Report Date: 28 May 2003
Meeting Date: 27 May 2003
Report by: John Angelico (03) 9544 8792

Numbers for May were down, possibly weather-related.

1. New browser
Following a pause for setup, which included some struggle with proxy
settings, we introduced the latest browser for OS/2 and eCS:
Mozilla-Firebird.

Slim by recent Mozilla standards, it includes most modern features (tabbed
panels, sidebars, auto-completed sign-ins etc) but has been deliberately
designed as a browser without email, newsgroup or composer functions. It
therefore runs very well on old systems (eg. the SIGs 64Mb RAM, P200 CPU
machine) and will probably go like a scalded cat on any current
well-optioned hardware.

With the History feature plus excellent drag/n/drop to the Desktop,
Firebird is now approaching the level of integration with OS/2 which we
last saw in the original WebExplorer released with Warp 3.

The Mozilla project has now been subdivided into a number of Modules
(Firebird browser, Thunderbird email client, composer, newsgroup reader
etc), and the Mozilla v1.4 just released could be the last all-in-one
browser. The concept now is to release modules which can be mixed/n/matched
to suit individual user needs - an enlargement of the 'plug-ins' idea.

Conclusion: based on first looks, highly recommended

2. Hardware: motherboard warning
Bob Traynor reported on an epidemic of capacitor failures which render
motherboards useless. Full details have been posted to the SIG mailing
list.

3. Backup Strategies
John Angelico outlined some essential points in developing a backup and
data protection strategy. Outline notes will be published shortly on the
SIG website.

4. Tech-Talk
In the second half of the meeting we discussed full-screen vs windowed
operations especially for Windows software running in a Win-OS2 session,
plus settings to modify the behaviour of sessions to suit particular needs
of programs.

The meeting closed at 9:15pm to try a new eatery nearby.
Conclusion: excellent value-for-money!

Easy - Click Downloads -> Status; check the box that says 'Use proxy for FTP' then enter
the proxy details.

Hope this helps,

Paul.

Thanks Paul,

I missed it. I did not realize that it was on the "status box"
or that the option window would only appear once you put
the tick in the box that says 'Use proxy for FTP'.

I will test it out next time I am at the club rooms.

I just hope this "option" is not dependant on downloading an
update control config file from the ecomstation site.
I might just take the files d/l to my own system by the eCS MT
and burn them to cd, just in case I need to update the version
of the eCS MT etc currently installed.

BobT.

I only knew it was there somewhere as I remembered reading a newsgroup post when the
functionality was added :)

It shouldn't be dependant on any updated control files, as eCSMT uses wget to do all it's
downloading - all it's doing is passing the proxy settings to wget to allow proxy ftp
transfers.

Layer 2 ADSL essentially just means that the Telstra authentication servers are cut out of
the loop and the ISP's are used instead, increasing reliability. PPPoE or PPPoA are still used
regardless of L2 or L3.

A much better explanation is here:
http://adsl.internode.on dot net/faq/padsl-l2tp.htm

>Anything special required for OS/2

Layer 2 or Layer 3 ADSL has no effect on OS/2.

I just changed my Internode ADSL to Layer 2 yesterday - working great so far - but I'm
using a D-Link DSL-504 router.

Cheers,

Paul.
