More - even better news on this CD-RW drive.

The adds say that the price has been reduced by $10 from $128 to $118, but when I went into the store
in Chatswood I found it has been reduced $30 to just $98 !!

That's the same price as some of the CD players and this is a 52 x burner. Be careful though, they also
have the slower (48x) CW088 model on sale at $98 as well.

I think we must have a "closet OS/2er" in Dick Smiths head office as, although the web site staes that
the CD Burner is OS/2 compatible (amd it is as a standard MMC device using CDRecord/2), the box doesn't
even mention OS/2.

I only paid $105 for my Lite-On 52x burner a month or so ago - at the time the DSE drive
was $128. In this weekend's paper, the Lite-On drives have been going for around $85.

And personally, I'd prefer Lite-On to Cyberdrive - whoever the hell they are :)

AFAIK modems aren't aren't matched. They just make a reasonable
guess what impedance they are faced with.

I use a Maestro Woomera modem (external). This modem WILL
change it's impedance to match the ph line (10 steps). The
Australian Farmer's Federation commissioned Maestro to produce
a modem for "dirty" line conditions & the Woomera is the result.

Expensive, but quite impressive! At the end of the day ya got's ta
ask yourself. How much will it cost in the long run if you are getting
less than optimum speed? When you are comparing dows & Warp
speeds, be sure to compare apples with apples.

One cannot judge performance simply by the initial connection speed, as
reported
by DOIT etc. To get a clear indication of speed, dload a large
(compressed) file
and monitor what is happening using some program like Smartbar. At the
end of
the day, it is Bps that is important, not connection speed (which will
alter without
DOIT telling you)

For reference, I'll give you an idea of speeds I get, & I have some
dirty line issues.
Connection speed:- often 52000 (unimportant & does change when things
get rough)
Bps compressed:- flat chat, 5656 Bps
Bps uncompressed:- over 11000 Bps

The Woomera uses V90 & 56Flex, hence the term, dual modem.

I plugged this modem in and everything worked without doing anything eg.
DOIT, ZOC,
PMFAX. I did try the voice side with PMFAX, alas, no show. At the
moment, I don't
need an answering machine, so this is not an issue. If circumstances
change, I will
play with it (Woomera) to get it going, or simply plug in my old 33K
Maestro.

No, I do not have any affiliation with Maestro, just nice to see
products that work well.
www.maestro dot com dot au

If you want a handset on the same ph line, you can plug it into the
Woomera which
would probably help with misbehaving handsets.

Note to Ed:-
Looking forward to you demonstrating eCS in Adelaide later this month.

Cheers
Wayne

By the generic documentation, I suspect Cyberdrive actually only re-badge other peoples
hardware. Actually quite a few well known names buy in and re-badge. Anyway I'm happy with
the price and quality of build and the generic documentation does refer to OS/2 and DOS
support.

I'm about to build it in to replace my Ricoh 8x burner that I only bought a year ago, so
I'll see soon enough how well it actually works.

I think you hit on the point. Performance depends on the quality (and often price) of the modem.
If your modem adjusts to match line impedance, that's a good thing to have, especially on "dirty"
lines as you say. Alas not all modems have this feature AFAIK.

Guess things may have changed since I used modems - I'm a total convert to Broadband now. My
download speed record is over 2Mb/s !! I know others claim more, but this was a single channel
download, not multi, so "true" speed.

Works fine - 600 MB written in 2 minutes !! I couldn't believe it ! I used the CD sample
supplied with the drive, so I expect it's rated at 52 X (says just "multi-speed"), recorded at
52 x using CDRECORD/2. I've checked the CD produced and all data is accessible.

Next thing is to test if overburn will work on it. I have some 800MB (90Minute) CD-Rs. It's
supposed to be able to write 99 (or at least 94) minute CDs. This depends on getting suitable
media - apparently SAST (one of the cheap makes) is best !

Cheers/2

Ed.

Yeah 52x is nice :) I moved from 20x to 52x and love it :)

Let me know how you go with Overburn and cdrecord. I haven't been able to get it to work
in OS/2 using the -overburn option on an ISO that was like 80:30 long. Interestingly
enogh, Nero under Win98 worked perfectly on the same media that failed a test write with
cdrecord.

Paul.

ahem, last I checked, CD ROMs were about $35 retail, and, CD-R/RW $95 (Acer brand BenQ)

(that was several weeks ago when I dicovered my Sony SCSI CDROM won't read CD-RWs)

80 m/52=1.54
80 m/48=1.67

Gosh Ed, I feel positively ancient, my CDR400t & CDRW2460 SCSI Yamaha
writers just chug along, often making redbook audio CDs at 1x just so
they work well in ancient CD-players.

what chipset does it use ? PMFax lets you select chipsets for voice usage

my understanding is that additional sockets are wired in parallel, nothing more,
nothing less.

I guess they could connect whatever, but, I'd guess, they don't.

anyhow, tonight I unplugged the Panasonic cordless, and, left the Swistell phone 'in' ,
and, only got 33.6, so, clearly the Swistell is the culprit.

with P plugged in , and S unplugged, I got about 45
