All X3 does (AFAIK) is ignore what the dialtone sounds like. If the modem is not
configured for the Australian phone system. If that's all you put in, the modem will
run with all the other settings left as they are from the last time you set them of
the factory default settings if you haven't set them. My experience with this is that
often your modem will then only work at 33k6 and not try to work at 56k (I say try as
the best I have ever got is 52k). I always need a string of settings to get to > 33k6
and these settings are hardware dependant. This is all relevant to "real" ie non
Win-Modems of course.

Ed et all

talking about modem setup strings, etc:

I have an External '56 WebExcel' modem .

no matter what I do, that's what happens:

*if* modem connects at 33,600, I can stay connect indefinitely, it works puurfect

*if* modem connect at **anything** HIGHER that 33.6, within approx. 10 to 60 seconds, connection
drops off, after redial, it connects at 33.6, works purrfect forever.

in the 10 to 60 seconds at higher speed, it does work, until it drops off

so, at 33.6, I can not fault it;
at anything higher, I can not use it .

suggestions ?
same happens from windoze98 or OS/2 InJoy

in windoze, I installed Intel/Cirrus driver for MD56, as well as, generic modem, made no difference
current InJ setup string is:

AT&F
ATQ0S0=0V1X4&C1&D2W2&K3%C1%E1\N4

(I think a lot of these are defaulkts, but, I've entered them 'in desperation')

Voytek,

This sounds to me like a noisy telephone line problem.
I had similar experiences at home.
Get telstra to check your line.

There is an article out there somewhere, and I'm going to be a pain in the rear and say
I can't remember the URL, but the jist of it was; getting full 56K is close to impossible as
to the great many variables related to line guality, distance, ISP's and modem init
strings. It also mentioned that the connect info might say 56k, but the actual throughput
could be less, and in some cases noticably so. They recomended forcing a lower
connection speed if this was the case.

Cheers
G

I'm averageing 49333 per connection but have gone as low as 28000 and as high as
50k (about)

Sorry, I trying to say the difference between not connecting and connecting,
not "working to max capacity" :). X3 is my first port of call when asked
about modem problems and it usually sorts things out so it will dial and
connect... then you get busy with the alphabet soup :)

You dont mention if this is a 56k FLEX or V90 modem... anyway, try adding
one of these to your init string
       +ms=11,1,1200,33600
If your modem has problems accepting the above string, try:
       +ms=v34,1,1200,33600

These force the connect to be 33.6 max.

I'd prefer a string that makes it connect at higher than 33.6... ;>)

under circumstances, I guess I might have to settle for what's offered.

Telstra can test your connection using a MOLDS (Modem Online Diagnostic
System) test. If you are losing connections on a regular basis or getting
low connection speeds, call 13 2203 and request a MOLDS test.

thanks, Bob,

I might try that

last time I tried (which is several years ago, admitedly) they essentially
told me to get lost, or rather, to buy a data service, and, not complain
about data problems (hence my reply to Ed).

as an aside, I've always blamed the 'poor line quality', though, last week,
I had a windoze pc with internal modems (probably a winmodem at that), and,
much to my surprise, I was getting 'reliable' connects at higher than 33.6,
I think, about 44 or so,

which made me wonder

Persistence. I've always found that if you don't get what you want out of
telstra on that call hang up and try again. Its amazing the different
responses you get to the same problems.

Down side is that it turns a 1/2 hr on the phone into 1/2 a day... but then
you get the joy of listening to all that on hold "music" :)

I've booked myself in, it takes up to 5 days to get MOLDSed

they also warned me about 'trying to send data at such agressive speed can
be counterproductive' I guess a laymen's term of fcs overflows

Subject: No sound with WarpVision

I can't get any sound when playing a DVD with WarpVision. When the video starts, the speaker icon on the front panel is overlaid with a cross, and then returns to normal when video playback stops.

The video will play both as a window and full-screen.

I think my sound setup is OK as it will play system sounds and music CDs.

On the Warpvision Audio settings page it shows-

Audio ID=0
Disable audio unchecked
Normalize audio checked
Device=0
Shared access unchecked
No resampling

and I have tried fiddling with these settings with no success.

Anyone able to help?

BTW, the 'original' WebExcel had metal cases, were Rockwell based,
that's what I used for my Terminal Server, they worked very well,

then, they had plastic cases, still same shape, still Rockwell

then, apart from name, everything changed, I was told they were still same
modems in new cases, but, they were not;

they now were Cirrus chipset, (whch I think is now Intel)

anyhow, I just found the box, I still have 2 or 3 of them:

it states:
ME220N MD5650 (Australia)
V90 56K
ITU-T V90 V43 V32b V32 V22b V22
V42 MNP2-4 V42b MNP5
V17 V29 V27ter V21ch2

interestingle, the box has both Cirrus Logic and Rockwell logos, perhaps,
they vary from production to production...?

Sounds like your phone line could be noisy but try this initialisation string anyway:

ATZ
AT&F%E2W1S91=13S9=13AT+MS=12,1,300,56000,0,0 &W&W1X3

And before we all start di-secting this string, please just try it first. "it works for me".

Slightly off topic from what we have been talking about, the latest 56K modems are now
labeled as V92 instead of V90 - does anyone know what the difference is ?

I just downloaded the latest AT&T service driver to my works laptop and the connection
speed has gone up from 52k max to a constant 54K connection, so perhaps this is
something to do with V92 vs. V90 ??

I'm pretty sure National semiconductor bought Cirrus, not Intel.

Which "Zone" is the DVD written for ?

Which "Zone" is your DVD drive set to ?

Did you select "english" as the language in the setup ? (Strange but apparently it affects several things).

and last which version are you using and when you installed it, did you remember to delete video2.ini before installing over any previous version ?

I've never gotten sound in WV on my laptop, but that is because of the
driver for my Realtek ALC201 chipset is not working right.

What I'd suggest would be to set Audio ID=128 which I'm told is for the
English audio stream in a DVD. Also on the DVD/VCD tab in the settings
make sure that "English, American" is selected as the Audio Language.
Finally make sure you delete or rename the video2.ini file everytime you
install a new version of WVGUI, then make all these changes to the
settings settings all over again. Its a pain, but since WV is still in
development the INI structure is subject to change, and I have seen weird
problems reported that sometimes go away if a new video2.ini is cretaed.

Hi All,
The only problem with WinModems these days is exactly that:- they only
Work under Windows, or an OS that has a driver. Modern computers have
enough CPU to handle the extra processing required. Agere, (formally
Lucent), Rockwell & other chipsets work very well in a well-designed
modem with good analog electronics & CODEC algorithms.

A quality modem will provide more reliable connects & higher throughput
than a crappy-one.

I've got a WinModem in my W2k box:- works great!

All *serial* external modems are hardware modems, most USB modems are
WinModems.
Internal PCI modems are almost always WinModems.

Surprisingly-enough Dick Smith "Spirit" external modems are quite good,
I bought a PCMCIA one, works a treat.

V90 rockwell command-set is almost the norm now, do a search on google
for what all the alphabet soup does.

I use a Banksia 28.8 upgraded to 33.6 as a voice/fax/data with PMfax etc,
and, some really ancient Netcom 1234 with SuperPager for SMS gateway

Well... the reason I started asking about modems is that the Banksia I had
let the smoke out. Having said that though it stood in good service for ~3
years.

I have a 33.6K Banksia inboard modem that is now almost 8 years old, still
fitted with original smoke<g>.

I would still recommend them highly, although I agree with Daryl about the
Tricky Dicky PCMCIA Spirit modem. It's a lovely little unit for my Thinkpad
- a pleasant surprise.
