I don't think we should keep taking up time on the list on this but just one
last post, yes the 190 are the chargable calls, the point is they are
"owned" by Telstra and you are blocked from calling them if you are on the
Orange network.

I've just installed for the 1st time the Scitech video driver (from CP2, the IBM licenced copy)

some stupid Qs:

W4 CP2 install suggested the S3 driver (I have an S3 card); I've altered selection to Scitech/se driver
installation completed OK, driver works fine, 1024at85 (or, was it 75?, not sure).

if I was to change the video card to another..... what does it need to tell Scitech... do you reinstall for Scitech/se again,
or ?

what the difference between the IBM CP2 Scitech/se, and, full Scitech ?

Subject: [os2genau] Conflict between Java 1.31 and TCPIP 4.32

After upgrading to the latest versions of Java and TCPIP, the TCPIP
configuration program TCPCFG2 doesn't work anymore. It gives a java create
error and hangs the os/2 window. ctrl+c terminates the program.

I am sure I have read something about this but I can't find the doco any
more. Have any of you also had this problem. Perhaps it's because I now have
Java 1.3.x as the default JRE rather than 1.1.8 ? Since the Java 1.1.x code
is not being developed anymore and new programs all seem to need the 1.3.x
level, it seems logical to switch the default.

I also have a another problem (possibly related, possibly not) that I can't
get the DDNS server to start, it simply terminates when I try to start it.
Running it with debug switched on doesn't seem to shine any more light on
the problem. I have had the DDNS along with the DHCP server working
previously but not at the latest TCPIP & Java levels (again, this may or may
not be relevant).

Any ideas gratefully received !

Cheers/2

Ed.

Simple:

1) Shutdown
2) Pull old card out
3) Put new card in
4) Boot
5) Umm, nothing else. Well, maybe change the resolution, etc.

One of the selling points of SDD is that it detects the card
automatically at boot time. I've never done it, but, I have seen
reports that it works.

Hi Voytek,

The full Scitech has alot more features, including the abillity to import Windows monitor
profiles, just in case your monitor is not listed, and TV out works on cards that support
TV out.

TCPCFG2 is easy, load up c:\tcpip\bin\tcpcfg2.cmd into an editor, and insert
'c:\java11\bin\' before the line 'java COM.ibm.raleigh.tcp.tcpcfg2.client.Tcpcfg2c
%tcplang% local notrace'

That forces tcpcfg to use Java 1.1.

Hope this helps,

Paul.

The second page in System object in System setup, should say Scitech Device
(or something like that), not your actual Monitor. If you change the video
card to another supported by SciTech, you have to do *NOTHING* it spots the
new card during startup and makes all neccessary changes to itself. This IS
the very best feaure of SCiTech, it enables you to use the same image on
machines with different video cards or to simply replace a faulty or
underpowered card with a newer one and NO software changes are needed as
long as the new card is supported by SciTech.

The difference between the IBM/Se and the full GA Scitech Driver is the
number of cards supported. The IBM Version supports those video chipsets
used in IBM hardware (or at least most of them), the Scitech version
supports more video chipsets. Both versions are at the same engine code
level.

Just to close this one out, the same fix when applied to ddnsaps.cmd (DDNS
Server Administrator) and ddnsapc (DDNS configuration program) allowed me to
run the DDNS configuration program, which in turn created the zone file that
NAMED.EXE looks for and now EVERYTHING is running as it should.

Thanks again Paul, I'll know what to look for next time this happens. I'll
update my documentation for the next time !

No worries Ed,
But if you have any more problems with BPAlogin you're on your own! Now that Tel$tra
are offering a 100% refund of installation costs for users under contract, I'm leaving BPA
Cable and will be getting Internode ADSL in July.

(seriously though - if Telstra change something about the login client - I'd be happy to
look at recompiling bpalogin - I just wouldn't be able to test it!

Paul.

Thanks again Paul.
I know Internode from my time in Adelaide, they're good group of people,
unfortunately they'll have to rely on Telstra's ADSL infrastructure as do
Primus and others. From what I have seen with Daryl's Primus configuration,
the technology still has some way to go. Cable was cheaper, faster and more
reliable but maybe with some more companies getting involved in ADSL
broadband, things will improve. The System seems to change MTU size without
warning, which can cause some problems.

What was the reason for the change from Cable ? Is the allocated bandwidth
cheaper with Internode ?

Cheers/2

Ed.

P.S. Not directly OS/2 related but the webpages at
http://www.speedguide dot net/Cable_modems/cable_registry.shtml gives some
useful tuning tips for Cable and xDSL.

G'day Ed,
Reason for change is a few reasons - I hate Telstra, I hate Telstra, I hate Telstra. That
feels better :). I dislike the way that Telstra has ruined broadband in Australia by
introducing download limits. Whilst the 3gb limit never really posed me a problem, it's
a principle thing!!

The plan I'm going to go with with Internode is still 3gb, but uploads are free, and it's
slightly cheaper than Telstra. Oh and it's not Telstra :) Internode are earning
themselves a very good reputation with the way they do business. I can also change
to a reasonably priced $99.95 plan that includes 4.5gb of data but will go with the 79.95
3gb plan for now.

I hadn't jumped ship previously due to the relatively high changeover cost, with having
to buy an ADSL modem at $339 for an ethernet version, a central ADSL splitter at $36
then $139 for connection. But with the amnesty for Telstra customers that are under
contract, and a full refund of the $189 I paid for installation of Bigpond cable in April last
year, I think now is the best time possible to change to ADSL.

Home phone will be changing to anyone but Telstra as of 27th of June too :)

Regards,

Paul.

Hmm, Do I get the message that you don't like Telstra ? I have also been
tempted to move over to Optus. They have a good deal on combined
TV/Cable-Internet/Telephone but their usage policy is restrictive and the TV
isn't as good as Foxtel (IMHO), so I'll guess I'll stay as I am for now.
"Better the Devil you know" and all that !

thanks, Ed

(hmmm, in the past, I've set all servers to 'VGA' to allow HS/video cards swapping, this seems like a better idea...)

talking about op. sys. images:

you wouldn't have a script for fixing up a standard image for NetBIOS, TCP/IP etc settings ?

It is a better way for multiple machines - AND IT WORKS ! at least I've had
it work without problems when I switched from an SiS Onboard video to an S2
Trio 64v+ card.

I don't have a script for Netbios / TCP but the files affected are
\IBMLAN\IBMLAN.INI \IBMCOM\PROTOCOL.INI \MPTN\ETC\TCPOS2.INI (that's the
tricky one as its not a flat file but rather a real INI file) RFCNAMES.LST
and RESOLV2. I guess these could all be "adjusted" using a pretty simple
REXX program.

Cheers/2

yes, that's what I was after, a pretty simple REXX program (that I don't have...)

I generally change startup/config/ibmcom/ibmlan/setup.cmd, don't recall having to change the other files

back to Scitech:

I tried to install W4CP2 wirh Scitech/se on a Compaq with ATI 3DRagePro video;
on rebbot, it trapps with some sort of 'sdd' trap: is that trying to tell me it's an unsupported video ?
