But I'm asked to enter the "mime-type" too. hat is this about?

Hi,
One of the LinuxSA guys gave me the solution:
GhostScript & GSView on Windoze will create PDFs locally.

Hi Paul.

I am jumping in here anew since I have the same symptoms as Graham, and
having been lurking on this thread with interest. I have installed Update 2
from ECS but this Odin thing I have had since Update 1. It hasn't been a
problem since we don't do a lot of Win32.

I downloaded that zip file, but having looked inside and seen how much
there is, I am cautious about unzipping everything, installing and then not
being able to back out cleanly.

How would I recover from this heart transplant surgery ie. what if the fix
doesn't solve my problem?

I have zipped up the current OS2LDR and OS2KRNL files but what else should
I be saving - "JUST IN CASE" - everything represented in the zip?

Alternatively, could I just unzip and install the OS2LDR and OS2KRNL files
only?

Hi John,
Yes, but how do I run M$ Office on the same box :)
ODIN doesn't quite do it, & Virtual PC is an extra cost which would
require a hardware upgrade to run it, not that I'm implying Virtual PC
is badly coded.

Mac users have had the same problem for years & lets face-it, whilst
not as technically elegant, having a file server for shared files &
networked workstations running the real OS natively is the
simplest/cheapest way to go.

Plus you can get support if something goes wrong :)

What I want to do is allow files created on Windoze, (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint et-al) to be converted to PDFs.

Once they are in that format, I can easily read, print or fax them from
eCS.
This solution would solve 90% my, (& others), eCS / Windows
compatability problems.

Hi Kris.

Um, so far I have called mime-type "x-pdf" to identify it as an extension
to NS but still type PDF. I am not too clear on the conventions in this
area, but have followed the style of the other entries I already found.

If anyone can explain it better, please do.

Well, I've put a lacklustre

text/ps

in the field.

The first time it didn't work, but the second time NS configured automagically itself
in respect to gvpm.exe.

So finally I've got rid of the Acrobatic interference. I own you one - thank you very
much!

Yeah, sorry. I haven't even missed Win32 support on my eCS here. That's how
little I have to worry about Win-compatibility.

All of those file types? Mainly Word?

I find Papyrus is able to read MS-Word latest versions very well (even the
demo version does, but it doesn't print...). Mesa does a sparkling job on
XLS files. I have no idea about PPT though.

G'day John,
The below text from the readme included with the Testcase kernels details what files
should be backed up - essentially the trace files and the kernel and loader.

I enjoy life on the edge so I don't worry about backups :)

Following are rough instructions for applying the os2krnl fix:
In the directory from which you boot (C:\ or d:\ or whatever), type these
commands. Note that os2krnl should have come with this file.

>1. attrib -r -s -h os2krnl
>2. attrib -r -s -h os2ldr
>3. copy os2krnl os2krnl.sav
>4. copy os2ldr os2ldr.sav
>5. copy \os2\system\trace\*.tdf \save (or wherever)
>5. unzip -o xxx.zip
>If you want, you can turn the os2krnl and os2ldr attributes back on, but
>it's not necessary to do so.

Hope this helps,
Paul.
